MILAN - On leaving the Saras offices this afternoon Inter president Massimo Moratti was interviewed by journalists, mainly about the David Suazo matter.
Dr Moratti, what happened with Suazo? Are you surprised by this agreement between Milan and Cagliari?
"There was a complete agreement with us, that took everything into consideration. It is a surprising change of will. The player, however, has signed for us, so we will see."
(Cagliari president) Massimo Cellino has said he tried to reach you last Thursday but couldn't get through...
"This is not true. He never looked for me, I didn't receive any phone calls. Perhaps he was looking to make a personal excuse."
With Inter well ahead in the negotiations, what's your opinion of Milan's behaviour?
"Let's say that this too is not very excusable, but I know the people, and there's not much you can do. However, now we will look at the practical aspects. There's a player who wants to join us, so we will see how it ends up."
Are there still any chances of pursuing a deal for Suazo, or is it difficult now?
"They often say it's the player's desire that counts, so... But Cagliari's conduct is so surprising, that I honestly haven't had time to think what might be the reasons, like friendships with others, or the consequences, or rather what we will do."
Adriano Galliani has drawn a comparison with the Zlatan Ibrahimovic matter of a year ago...
"This has nothing to do with it. The Ibrahimovic thing is the same thing that has happened this year with Suazo. It was us who were about to get him, and they tried to get him. They didn't succeed last time, but maybe they have this time."
What's your explanation for the fact that Milan are always chasing the same strikers as Inter?
"It's a feature of recent times, but there's nothing I can say."
Will Inter pursue the Suazo matter with what they have in their hands?
"Yes. To respect the player's desire."
Did Milan move for the player because Inter are after Samuel Eto'o?
"No. I think they were so excited by the idea, they wanted to put it into practice, but on the basis of our conduct, it's inexcusable. I seem to remember Cellino saying 'I'm keeping to my agreement with Moratti'."
Roberto Mancini is disappointed. Suazo was a fixation for him...
"Suazo wasn't a fixation, he was a player we believed to be right for us, for our game, so of course Mancini is disappointed."
The name of Andriy Shevchenko has been linked to Inter...
"It's not as if we're looking for something at all costs. It was a surprise, and as such we should leave room for surprise. But the matter hasn't finished yet."
Does the possible non-arrival of Suazo preclude the departure of Adriano or Alvaro Recoba?
"We still haven't arrived at any final solutions in this sense, because there's a whole transfer market, not just us. We have never said we want to sell Adriano, and for Recoba we just need to satisfy his desire, which is to play. We will see. However, I don't think much changes just because of what has happened."
Could Carlos Alberto Tevez be a worthy replacement for Suazo?
"A lot of players could be. Each player has his own characteristics."
