History on Inter's side with one-goal lead

Inter take a 1-0 lead into a European return leg away from home for the tenth time in the club's history. On 8 of the previous 9 occasions, the Milanese club have gone on to win over two legs. The Nerazzurri were eliminated by Aston Villa after a penalty shoot-out in the second leg of their 1994/95 UEFA Cup tie against the English side, but have progressed in Europe on every other occasion. In chronological order, Inter have defended a 1-0 lead to eliminate Monaco (1963/64 European Cup), Torpedo Moscow and Real Madrid (1966/67 European Cup), Standard Liege (1971/72 European Cup), Cologne (1984/85 UEFA Cup), Apollon Limassol (1993/94 UEFA Cup), Casino Graz (1996/97 UEFA Cup) and Schalke 04 (1997/98 UEFA Cup).

Inter in Europe on 22 April – a win and a defeat

For the third time, Inter will play a European cup tie on 22 April. In 1981, Inter beat Real Madrid at the San Siro. Bini scored the winning goal on that occasion, but the Spaniards won the return leg 2-0. In 1997, Inter lost 1-0 away to Monaco, but qualified for the final thanks to a 3-1 victory in the first leg.

Crespo close to double figures

After breaking Mazzola's record of 7 goals for Inter in a single edition of the European Cup/Champions League set in 1963/64, South American striker Hernan Crespo went on to equal Boninsegna's record of 9 goals for Inter in Europe (set in the 1969/70 Fairs/UEFA Cup). By scoring his next goal, Crespo will become the first ever Inter player to have reached double figures in a single edition of a European cup competition. Crespo is currently in third place in the all time list of Nerazzurri marksmen in Europe. First is Mazzola with 16 goals, while Jair is in second place with 11.

Just one draw for Inter in Spain

In the history of European cup competitions, the Nerazzurri have only drawn one of their 15 matches played in Spain. That was a 3- 3 stalemate with Alaves in the 2000/01 UEFA Cup. Inter have recorded 3 wins and 11 defeats in the other 14 matches. In 9 of the 15 defeats at the hands of Spanish clubs, Inter have failed to score.

No goal conceded in Europe for 221'

The last time Inter let in a goal in this season’s Champions League was on 11 March 2003 when Shearer scored his second in Newcastle United’s 2-2 draw with Inter at the Meazza. Since then, the remaining 41 minutes of that clash and the entire matches against Bayer Leverkusen and Valencia (excluding additional time) have passed.
