Previous meetings: Arsenal v Inter

Wednesday evening's Champions League match at Highbury will be the first ever competitive match between Arsenal and Inter.

Arsenal at home in Europe: just one defeat by Italian clubs

Arsenal have won 5 and drawn 3 of their previous 9 home European matches against Italian clubs. The only defeat was in October 1999 when the Gunners went down 1-0 at home to Fiorentina, though the match was played at Wembley instead of Highbury.

No European home win for Gunners since last September

You have to go back to 17 September 2002 and a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund to find Arsenal's last home victory in Europe. Since then, the Londoners have lost once and drawn 4 matches.

Ljungberg, Henry danger

Freddy Ljungberg and Thierry Henry are Arsenal's top scorers against Italian sides. The Swedish midfielder scored twice against Lazio in the 2000/01 Champions League then notched another brace against Juventus the following season. French striker Henry put one past the Bianconeri in the 2001/02 Champions League and scored a hat-trick against Roma at the Olimpico last season.

100th appearance for Italian clubs for Cruz

If fielded against Arsenal, Julio Ricardo Cruz will make his one hundredth appearance for Italian clubs. So far the Argentine striker has played 89 Serie A matches (27 goals scored), 4 Coppa Italia matches (2 goals) and 6 European matches (1 goal).

Inter in England: no draw for 40 years

Inter haven't drawn away to an English club since the 0-0 stalemate at Everton on 13 September 1963. The Nerazzurri went on to win the European Cup that season, beating Real Madrid 3-1 in the final at Vienna's Prater Stadium. Inter have lost 8 and drawn 2 of their other 10 matches on English soil.

LONDON - Inter become the first Italian club to win at Highbury with a highly convincing 3-0 thrashing of Arsenal in Matchday 1 of Champions League Group B on Wednesday.

After an opening period of Gunners dominance, Inter grew in stature and opened the scoring in the 21st minute. Julio Cruz took the ball into the Arsenal box, beat an advancing Lehmann then with a deft touch of the ball sent his shot in at the far corner.

Inter redoubled three minutes later through Andy van der Meyde, who like El Jardinero opened his scoring account for the Nerazzurri. But the Dutch winger did it in spectacular fashion with a spectacular volley in at the near post after a naive clearance from Kily's left-wing cross.

The Nerazzurri kept things tight at the back as Arsenal tried to get a foothold. But when Henry saw a penalty kick saved by Toldo in the 32nd minute after Materazzi shoved Ljungberg in the box, the Gunners must have known it was going to be a night of frustration.

Oba Martins rubbed salt into the wound four minutes before the break: Turkish wizard Emre made it difficult for the Gunners to distinguish the blue stripes from the black ones with a mazy run across the face of the box then made a delightful chipped pass forward to the Nigerian, who evaded a challenge from Sol Campbell and fired a left-footed shot past Lehmann.

Arsenal created more after the restart but the Nerazzurri defence responded superbly. Cristiano Zanetti, who had his best match for some time, did an excellent job on Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira, effectively ripping the heart out of any midfield initiative by the Gunners.

Inter could have turned it into a real humiliation minutes from time when Kallon advanced on goal after a defence-splitting one-two with Lamouchi. The Sierra Leone forward crashed his shot onto Lehmann's left-hand post, then Oba fired his follow-up shot wide.
