Vieri two away from Nerazzurri century

Two weeks ago at the Meazza Christian Vieri scored twice against Perugia to bring his total for the Nerazzurri to 98 goals. The centre-forward has scored 84 in the Serie A, 5 in the Coppa Italia, 5 in the Champions League and 4 in the Uefa Cup.

No Coppa Italia draw away since 1998

Inter's last away draw in the Coppa Italia was a 1-1 stalemate at Castel di Sangro on 11 November 1988. Since then the Nerazzurri have played 10 away matches in the domestic cup competition, with 4 victories and 6 defeats recorded.

Inter and 2-1 wins in first legs

Wednesday's match at the Granillo is the fourth time the Nerazzurri defend a 2-1 win from the first, home leg of a Coppa Italia tie. On three of those occasions Inter have progressed in the competition: in 1981/82 Inter knocked out Catanzaro in Calabria despite losing 3-2 after extra time, in 1987/88 they beat Empoli 1-0 in Tuscany, and in 1999/00 the Nerazzurri defeated Bologna 3-1 in the return match. The only cup exit after a victorious first leg came in 1990/91 when Torino beat Inter 1-0 at the Delle Alpi.

Recoba prolific against Reggina

Like Christian Vieri, Alvaro Recoba has scored 4 times against Reggina. El Chino's goals against the side from Reggio Calabria have come in Reggina v Inter (1999/00), Inter v Reggina (1999/00), Reggina v Inter (2000/01) and Reggina v Inter (2002/03).

Reggina's goal crisis

The Calabrians have scored just one goal in their last 5 matches: Di Michele's effort in the 55th minute of the first leg in Milan. Taking into account the remaining 35 minutes of that match plus the entire games against Udinese and Chievo, Reggina haven't scored for 215 minutes. At home, Reggina haven't netted since Dall'Acqua's goal in the 31st minute of Reggina 1-1 Modena on 9 November.

No Reggina draw in 8 cup matches

Reggina's last draw in the Coppa Italia was a 0-0 stalemate at home to Messina on 25 August 2002. Since then, the Calabrians have recorded 5 victories and 3 defeats.

Calabrians one away from 100 cup goals let in

The two goals conceded during the first leg at the San Siro mean Reggina have now let in a total of 99 goals in the domestic cup competition. The first Coppa Italia goal let in by the Calabrians was on 7 September 1958 when Lenuzza scored in the 99th minute (extra time) of Messina 1-0 Reggina.

REGGIO CALABRIA - Inter are through to the quarter-finals of the Tim Cup after some fairytale yet tempestuous football at the Granillo on Wednesday evening.

Defending a 2-1 lead from the first leg, the Nerazzurri fell behind to Leon's diving header six minutes before the break, then after playing a half against ten-man Reggina following Giacchetta's sending-off, Julio Cruz and Belardi's back combined to give Inter that required goal to progress in the domestic cup competition.

In the peultimate minute of added time at the end of the second half Inter's Argentine striker picked up the ball outside the box then struck a shot which swerved onto the post then rebounded off the Reggina keeper and into the net.

The dramatic equaliser aside, posts played a major part in the drama, as did Tombolini's cards (the ref pulled out as many yellows as goals we put past the Calabrians in the Serie A this season). Lamouchi could have levelled minutes before the break with a curled free kick that went round the Reggina wall and hit Belardi's left-hand post. At the other end early in the second half Inter's task could have been made a lot more difficult had Bonazzoli's impetuous lob not hit the woodwork.

Inter will face either Udinese or Bologna in the quarter-finals. The Bianconeri enjoy a 1-0 lead from the first leg ahead of Thursday's return match at Friuli Stadium.
