Inter with Urs Meier

At the Mestalla on Wednesday evening Urs Meier referees the Nerazzurri for the fifth time in European cup competitions. With the Swiss ref Inter are unbeaten, having managed 2 wins (1-0 at home to Schalke 04 in the 1997/98 Uefa Cup and 2-1 away to Ajax in the 2002/03 Champions League) and 2 draws (1-1 away to Spartak in the 1998/99 Champions League and 0-0 at home to Barcelona in the same competition two seasons ago). Including those 4 Inter matches, Meier has refereed a total of 19 matches involving Italian clubs, with 10 Italian victories, 5 draws and 4 defeats.

Spanish v Italian clubs

Italian teams haven't won on Spanish soil in their last 9 attempts (2 draws and 7 defeats). The last Italian club to win in Spain was Juventus, who beat Barcelona 2-1 at the Nou Camp on 22 April 2003.

Inter in Spain

Excluding their games away to Valencia, Inter have played 13 competitive matches against Spanish teams. Of those, the Nerazzurri have won 2, drawn 1 and lost 10.

Inter: fourth Euromatch on 20 October

Wednesday's Matchday 3 clash with Valencia is the fourth time Inter play a European cup competition match on 20 October. In 1982 the Nerazzurri were beaten 1-0 by Dutch side Az 67 in the Cup Winners' Cup and in the same competition in 1993 defeated Apollon Limassol 1-0 at the San Siro. The European Cup match between Borussia Moenchengladbach and Inter in 1971 was suspended after Roberto Boninsegna was struck on his head by a can.

Three consecutive Eurowins for Nerazzurri

Inter have won their last 3 Champions League matches and have scored at least one goal in each of their last 7 games in Europe's premier football tournament for clubs (total 13 goals scored). The last time the Nerazzurri failed to score in the Champions League was a year ago when they lost 3-0 away to Lokomotiv Moscow on 21 October. If Inter win Wednesday's Matchday 3 fixture at the Mestalla they will equal the run of four European victories from October to December 2002, when they beat Rosenborg at home, Ajax and Newcastle away, and Bayer Leverkusen at home.

Inter on target for 13 matches in a row

The Nerazzurri have scored in each of their last 13 competitive matches (9 in the Serie A, 4 in the Champions League), with a total of 29 goals scored. The last time Inter failed to score in a competitive fixture was last 25 April when they played out a scoreless draw with Lazio at the Olimpico.

VALENCIA - Inter bring home all three points from a hard-fought Uefa Champions League Matchday 3 encounter at the Mestalla to keep their one hundred percent record in Group G. Stankovic, Vieri, van der Meyde, Adriano and Cruz scored the goals in a 5-1 thrashing which see the Nerazzurri remain on top of the group, with Werder Bremen winning 2-1 away to Anderlecht in tonight's other match.

Mancini's men were presented with two good chances in the opening period. Adriano fired wide from Stankovic's short cross, then Emre saw a soft shot saved by Canizares after the Brazilian dribbled three opponents before cutting square to the Turk. At the other end Fontana pulled off a terrific one-handed save to deny Di Vaio from close range.

The Nerazzurri stunned Ranieri's men with two quick goals early in the second half. Unmarked in the Valencia box, Stankovic headed Favalli's left-wing cross into the top right-hand corner of the net, then Vieri silenced the Mestalla two minutes later, burying his 108th goal in black and blue into the bottom left-hand corner after Curro Torres failed to clear Adriano's right-wing cross.

Midway through the second half Di Vaio had a chance to pull one back but struck the far post with a diagonal shot. But a Spanish goal was on the cards and it came on 73 minutes when Argentina captain Aimar found the roof of the net with a first-time shot from Di Vaio's assist. The Valencia fight-back was short-lived as Andy van der Meyde restored Inter's two-goal advantage seconds after coming on for Vieri. The Dutchman took Adriano's through-ball into the area, dribbled Carboni then struck home.

Adriano made extra sure of the points with ten minutes remaining, smashing home Javier Zanetti's cross to net his seventh Champions League goal in five matches, then substitute Julio Cruz scored his first of the season in the dying seconds with a shot past Canizares from a Stankovic assist.
