Italian teams v Slovakian sides

Since Slovakia became an independent nation there have been just two two-legged European Cup ties between Italian and Slovakian clubs. In the 1997/98 Champions League group stage Juventus beat Kosice 1-0 away then won 3-2 at the Delle Alpi. And in the 1998/99 Intertoto competition Sampdoria disposed of Tauris, winning 2-0 at the Marassi and losing 1-0 away.

Inter beaten in Bratislava 23 years ago

Inter face Artmedia for the first time on Tuesday, but it's not the first time the Nerazzurri have played a European Cup competition game in Bratislava. On 29 September 1982 Inter, coached by Rino Marchesi, were beaten 2-1 by Slovan Bratislava in the Cup Winners' Cup, Takac and Bobek replying to Hansi Muller's opener from the penalty spot. But the Nerazzurri qualified for the next round thanks their 2-0 first leg win in Milan.

Born in France on 8 December 1963, Eric Poulat has been an international refereee since 1999. He has never taken charge of an Inter match before, but has refereed Italian clubs in Europe on 7 occasions (2 Italian wins, 3 draws and 2 defeats).

Artmedia v Inter

Tuesday's Champions League Group H match is the first meeting between the two teams. Inter also face a Slovakian team for the first time in their history.

Inter in Europe on 13 September

Against Artmedia on Tuesday Inter play a European cup competition match on 13 September for the fifth time, with 3 wins and 1 defeat from the other 4 games. Two of these victories are among Inter's five biggest wins in Europe. On 13 September Inter beat Hannover 8-2 in the 1960 Fairs Cup and La Valletta 6-1 in the 1972 UEFA Cup. Both matches were played at the San Siro.
Inter's other three biggest European wins are the 7-0 victory against Lyon in December 1958 (Fairs Cup), 6-0 against Dinamo Bucharest in November 1964 (European Cup) and 6-1 against Hannover in October 1960 (Fairs Cup).

Inter's other Euro win on 13 September was a 3-1 home victory against Floriana La Valletta in the 1978 Cup Winners' Cup, while the defeat was a 1-0 reverse against Malmo in the 1989 European Cup.

Adriano chasing Mazzola record

With his goal at Shakhtar Donetsk in qualifying last month Adriano equalled Jair's tally of 11 goals for Inter in the European Cup/Champions League. The Brazilian striker is now five away from reaching Sandro Mazzola's club record of 16 European goals.

No Artmedia goal in Europe for 312'

Artmedia Bratislava go into their maiden Champions League group stage match without a continental goal in 312 minutes. The Slovakian's last European goal was scored by Miculik in the 78th minute of August's qualifying round 5-0 win at home to Celtic. Artmedia have gone without scoring for the remaining 12 minutes of that match, the full 90 minutes of the return leg in Glasgow, and the entire third qualifying round tie against Partizan (90 minutes at home; 120 minutes in Belgrade).

BRATISLAVA - Inter got their 2005/06 Champions League campaign off to a positive start Tuesday with a 1-0 victory away to Slovakian champions Artmedia Bratislava. The Nerazzurri played most of the second half in ten men after Veron was red-carded for a second bookable offence.

Julio Cruz scored the winning goal on 17 minutes after a swift Nerazzurri attack down the left. Adriano received a through ball from Dejan Stankovic then unselfishly squared for El Jardinero to slide home his third goal in two games for Inter.

The Argentine striker and Luis Figo had chances to increase Inter's lead before the break as the hosts struggled to carve out any meaningful attempts on goal.

The face of the match changed ten minutes into the second period when Juan Sebastian Veron was sent marching for a second yellow.

Artmedia rallied and had two good chances to equalise in their maiden Champions League appearance. From close range Hartig headed a corner narrowly wide before Halenar met Kozak's cross then shot straight at Julio Cesar.

In between, Adriano went close to giving ten-man Inter a two-goal cushion when his curling free kick came back off the inside of the post.

In Tuesday's other Group H tie Rangers edged Porto 3-2 at Ibrox to share top spot with Inter after Matchday 1.
