Ajax v Inter in Amsterdam

Wednesday's round of 16 first leg is the fourth competitive match between the two teams in Amsterdam. Inter have the edge over the Lancers with 2 victories to 1 on Dutch soil.

First knockout clash

Ajax and Inter meet in a European knockout round for the first time. In the other three competitive European Cup/Champions League matches between the two teams, Ajax won the 1971/72 final thanks to a brace from Cruyff (48, 77), and Inter triumphed in both group-stage matches in 2002/03 (1-0 at home, 2-1 away, all 3 goals from Hernan Crespo).

Ajax v Italian clubs

Ajax have won 11, drawn 9 and lost 15 of their 35 competitive European cup competition matches against Italian teams. Of the 15 matches played in Amsterdam, the Lancers have won 6, drawn 5 and lost 4.

Inter v Dutch clubs

Including their 3 matches against Ajax, Inter have played a total of 13 competitive European games against Dutch sides, with 4 wins, 4 draws and 5 defeats. Of the 7 matches played in Holland, Inter have won 1 (2-1, 2002/03 Champions League group stage), drawn 3 and lost 3 (including 1971/72 European Cup final defeat in Rotterdam).

Ajax goal drought at home to Italians

Ajax are without a goal in their last three home matches against Italian teams. 294 competitive minutes have passed since Litmanen's 66th-minute Champions League goal in Ajax 2-1 Roma on 10 December 2002 - their last home effort against opposition from Italy.

No Ajax home draw in 5 games

Ajax's last European draw at home was the 2-2 Champions League stalemate with Bayern Munich on 8 December 2004. Since then the Dutch outfit have collected 4 wins and a defeat in front of their own fans.

Ajax consistent scorers at home

Ajax have scored in each of their last 7 European home matches (total 14 goals). Ajax 0-1 Juventus on 15 September 2004 was the last time they failed to score at home in Europe.

Inter looking to end bad run

Victory in Amsterdam will end the Nerazzurri's winless league run of three matches (2-1 defeats away to Fiorentina and at home to Juventus, 0-0 draw at Livorno). But failure to beat Ajax would see Inter's negative run stretch to four games without a win, something that hasn't happened since October-November 2004 when the Nerazzurri drew 7 games in a row.

Adriano one away from Mazzola record

With 15 European Cup/Champions League goals in a Nerazzurri shirt, Adriano is second in the all time list of Inter scorers in Europe's most prestigious competition. The Brazilian is just one goal away from equalling Sandro Mazzola's long-standing club record of 16 goals.

AMSTERDAM - Inter came back from two goals down to tie Ajax 2-2 in Wednesday's Champions League round of 16 first leg at the Amsterdam ArenA.

Dejan Stankovic and Julio Cruz scored second-half goals to cancel out efforts from Huntelaar and Rosales, and bring two valuable away goals back to Milan for the return on 14 March.

A creative Ajax side caused Inter problems from the outset and took a 16th-minute lead when in-form striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar met a Rosales cross from the right then directed his header past Toldo.

The Lancers stunned Inter with a second goal four minutes later when Mauro Rosales found the net with a close-range shot from Emanuelson's cross that went in off Walter Samuel.

Inter twice hit the woodwork in added time at the end of the first half, with Julio Cruz heading a Figo corner on to the crossbar, then Cordoba's follow-up header also hitting the bar before Stekelenburg smothered the loose ball.

Inter pulled one back through Dejan Stankovic four minutes after the restart. The Serb midfielder combined with Cambiasso in the box then saw his shot go in off Heitinga and Madura.

Four minutes from time Julio Cruz steered a Cambiasso pass over the line to level and keep this Champions League tie wide open.
