The ref: Frojdfeldt

Peter Frojdfeldt was born on 14 November 1963 in Sweden and has been an international referee since 2001. Inter v Ajax is his first competitive match involving an Italian club. The Swedish ref took charge of Iceland's 2-0 friendly international victory over Italy on 18 August 2004 in Reykjavik, where Marcello Lippi made his debut as Azzurri boss.

Ajax & 2-2 home draws from 1st legs

For the second time in their history Ajax go into a return leg away from home after drawing 2-2 in the first leg. In the 1957/58 European Cup quarter-finals the Lancers were beaten 4-0 at Vasas Budapest after a 2-2 draw in Amsterdam.

No Ajax defeat in Europe since September '05

Arsenal 2-1 Ajax on 27 September 2005 was the Lancers' last European defeat. Since that Champions League group match Ajax have collected 3 wins and 2 draws.

Ajax unbeaten away in 2005/06 European season

With 1 win and 3 draws, Ajax have yet to lose an away match in the 2005/06 European season. The 3-1 UEFA Cup defeat at Auxerre on 24 February 2005 was the last time Ajax lost away from home in Europe.

Inter always through after 2-2 draws from 1st legs

For the third time in their history Inter go into a European cup competition return leg at home after a 2-2 away draw from the first leg. In the 1963/64 European Cup semi-finals the Nerazzurri beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in the return leg to qualify for the final, and in the 2003/04 UEFA Cup they drew 0-0 with Sochaux to progress from the third round.

Adriano one away from Mazzola record

With 15 European Cup/Champions League goals in a Nerazzurri shirt, Adriano is second in the all time list of Inter scorers in Europe's most prestigious competition. The Brazilian is just one goal away from equalling Sandro Mazzola's long-standing club record of 16 goals.

300th 'Italian' appearance for Stankovic

If he plays against Ajax in the Champions League round of 16 return leg, Dejan Stankovic will make his 300th appearance for an Italian club. The Serb midfielder, who has played for Lazio and Inter in Italy, made his 'Italian' debut in the Biancocelesti's 2-1 Italian Super Cup victory over Juventus on 29 August 1998. He has played 201 times in the Serie A, 32 in the Coppa Italia, 62 in European cup competitions and 4 in other tournaments, scoring 49 goals.

MILAN - Dejan Stankovic scored as Inter beat Ajax 1-0 in Tuesday evening's Champions League round of 16 return leg at the Meazza to qualify for the quarter-finals of Europe's elite competition. The Nerazzurri now face Spanish outfit Villarreal over two legs on Wednesday 29 March (Stadio Giuseppe Meazza) and Tuesday 4 April (Estadio El Madrigal).

Roberto Mancini's men ran Ajax ragged with some slick first-half football, with the best early chances falling to front men Obafemi Martins and Adriano.

The Nigerian's spectacular volley on the turn rattled Stekelenburg's crossbar on 13 minutes, with the Brazilian uncharacteristically sending a penalty wide fourteen minutes later after Lancers captain Lindenbergh handled a Stankovic cross in his own box.

Perseverance paid off 12 minutes into the second half when Stankovic scored a memorable goal to put the Nerazzurri in front and leave Ajax facing a mammoth task. On his 300th appearance for an Italian club, the Serb midfielder ran on to Samuel's long pass down the left, took the ball past Maduro then curled right-footed into the far corner.
