Details:

2005/06 Champions League Inter 2-1 Villarreal

Italian clubs in Spain

Italian teams have managed 1 win, 4 draws and 11 defeats from their last 15 matches away to Spanish opposition. The only victory was Inter's 5-1 thrashing of Valencia in the Champions League on 20 October 2004.

Villarreal v Italian teams

Villarreal have won 3 (all 2-0 victories), drawn 2 (both 1-1) and lost 3 of their 8 competitive matches against Italian teams. The Spaniards have always won at home to Italian opposition (by the same score of 2-0).

Adriano looking to better Mazzola record

With his goal in the 7th minute of the Champions League quarter-final first-leg clash with Villarreal, Brazilian striker Adriano equalled Sandro Mazzola's long-standing record of 16 goals for Inter in Europe's most prestigious club competition.

Villarreal's home form

Villarreal have lost just one of their last 24 European games at home, a 1-2 UEFA Cup defeat to AZ 67 on 27 April 2005. The Spaniards have collected 17 wins and 6 draws from the other 23 games.

600th professional appearance for Toldo

Nerazzurri number one Francesco Toldo is set for his 600th appearance in a competitive fixture since turning professional. Before joining Inter, Toldo played for Fiorentina, Ravenna and Trento. He made his debut in Trento 2-0 Centese (Serie C2) on 8 September 1991.

Inter always through after 2-1 win from 1st leg

In the 1966/67 European Cup last 16 Inter won 2-0 at Vasas; in the 1998/99 UEFA Cup first round the Nerazzurri beat Braga 2-1; and in the 1997/98 UEFA Cup semi-final return leg they beat Spartak Moscow 2-1. In 1966/67 and 1997/98 the Nerazzurri went on to reach the final, losing 2-1 to Celtic (European Cup) and beating Lazio 3-0 (UEFA Cup).

VILLARREAL - Villarreal beat Inter 1-0 to qualify for the Champions League semi-finals on the away goals rule after last week's 2-1 defeat in Milan.

The Spanish outfit reach the semi-final stage of a European competition for the second time after their UEFA Cup last-four appearance in 2003/04.

Inter contained an attacking Villarreal in a fast-paced first half at the El Madrigal, with Riquelme firing off target from the distance on two occasions before Tacchinardi flashed a near-post header wide on the stroke of half time.

Argentine defender Rodolfo Arruabarrena scored the winning goal on 58 minutes with a looping header over Francesco Toldo from Riquelme's cross to level the tie at 2-2 and leave the Nerazzurri needing to score.

Pellegrini's men continued to push forward after edging in front and had chances to increase their lead through Forlan and Riquelme, who both forced Toldo into crucial saves.

Inter's best chance of a reply came in time added on when Viera made a point-blank save from Dejan Stankovic.
