Twente set for Champions League debut

Dutch champions Twente have never played in the Champions League in its current format. They have, however, played four matches in the old European Cup, notching two draws, as many defeats, and scoring only one goal.

No Inter draw in 11 European outings

Inter have won 8 games and lost 3 since their last draw in European competitions: a 2-2 stalemate at Dynamo Kiev in last season's Champions League group stage on 20 October 2009.

Nerazzurri chasing fourth clean sheet against Dutch clubs

Inter haven't conceded in a competitive game against Dutch opposition since their 2-2 draw with Ajax in the Champions League on 22 February 2006. Rosales scored the Amsterdam outfit's second goal in the 20th minute of that game. The Nerazzurri have since played three games against teams from Holland - all in the Champions League - winning 1-0 against Ajax in 2005/06, and at home (1-0) and away (2-0) to PSV Eindhoven in 2007/08.

Chivu on a century

If selected to play against Twente, Cristian Chivu will pull on an Inter shirt for the 100th time. The Romanian defender made his debut for the Nerazzurri in the 1-0 Italian Super Cup defeat to his former side Roma on 19 August 2007. He has represented Inter 69 times in Serie A, 18 in European competitions, 3 in the Italian Super Cup and 9 in the Coppa Italia.

Inter: four clean sheets since last away goal conceded

The last match in which Inter let in a goal away from home was last season's Champions League semi-final return leg at Barcelona. Piqué scored in the 84th minute of that game. Inter have since played four away games and kept four clean sheets: 2-0 at Lazio (Coppa Italia), 1-0 at Roma (Coppa Italia), 1-0 at Siena (Serie A), 0-0 at Bologna (Serie A).

The ref: Pedro Proenca Oliveira Alves Garcia

Portuguese official Pedro Proenca Oliveira Alves Garcia was born in Lisbon on 3 November 1970. A FIFA referee since 2003, he has been appointed to officiate in a European game for the second time this season after Salzburg 2-3 Hapoel Tel Aviv in the Champions League qualifying round. Proenca has refereed a Dutch team on one previous occasion (PSV Eindhoven 2-1 CSKA Moscow in the 2007/08 Champions League), and Italian sides twice (Roma 5-1 Aris Thessaloniki in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup, and Zurich 1-1 AC Milan in the 2009/10 Champions League).

ENSCHEDE - There were plenty of goals at the De Grolsch Veste Stadium as we opened our defence of the European crown with a 2-2 draw against Eredivisie champs Twente.

The Nerazzurri soon settled in Enschede and Wesley Sneijder - on target in this stadium the other week in Holland's 3-0 win over Japan - put us on the right track in the 13th minute, rifling home a loose ball after Mihaylov could only parry away Milito's angled drive.

Unruffled, the hosts delivered the sweetest of replies on 20 minutes through Janssen, who curled a 20-yard free kick into the top left corner after Pedro Proenca blew for a dubious foul on De Jong by Walter Samuel.

The pouring rain did little to dampen a vociferous home crowd and Janssen came close to giving the home fans a second goal to celebrate on 29 minutes, his fiercely struck free kick forcing a brilliant tipped save from Julio Cesar.

A minute later, Preud'homme's men edged in front when Diego Milito, the hero of last May's final in Madrid, unwittingly headed into his own net when defending a corner from Janssen.

Only once had the Champions League holders lost their first match of the following campaign and Inter weren't going down without a fight. The Nerazzurri produced a strong reaction and were unlucky not to level through Esteban Cambiasso, who saw his shot on the turn bounce back off the crossbar.

The equaliser arrived four minutes before the break and it came from the feet of Samuel Eto'o.

The Cameroon forward combined quickly with Goran Pandev and curled a cracking low shot past Mihaylov and into the bottom right corner for his fourth of the season and 20th in the Champions League.

Rafa Benitez's team suffered an injury setback fourteen minutes into the second half when Pandev was stretchered off. On came Coutinho for the Macedonian and the Brazilian youngster had several good chances on his Champions League debut.

The best one, though, fell to McDonald Mariga, who fired a low effort just wide of the far post after a neat pass from Coutinho.

Tonight's other Group A clash produced an identical result, with Werder Bremen coming from behind to hold Tottenham Hotspur 2-2 in Germany.
