MADRID – Inter could not be left out of the nominees for the Team of the Year Award at the Laureus World Sports Awards 2011, which are to be announced in Abu Dhabi from 5 to 7 February. This will be a very prestigious event that was unveiled yesterday in Madrid, in front of the Nerazzurri star Luis Figo: the Laureus World Sports Awards 2011 are in fact the greatest honour that a sportsperson or team can receive at a global level. The winners will be decided by the Laureus World Sports Academy, a jury made up of 46 of the most decorated sportsmen and women of all time, amongst which are Franz Beckenbauer, Emerson Fittipaldi, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, John McEnroe, Edwin Moses and Mark Spitz.
The other nominees for the Laureus World Team of the Year Award are, alongside Inter, the Spanish national football team, the Los Angeles Lakers, the Formula One team Red Bull, the All Blacks and the European Ryder Cup team.
“When considering the nominees, this year’s edition of the Laureus World Sports Awards 2011 is going to be both competitive and fascinating. The members of the jury will have a struggle on their hands when it comes to assigning their vote. The merits of all the candidates are undoubted. Obviously when it comes to the Laureus World Team of the Year Award, I have an idea of who should win it…” declared Luis Figo with a smile once he started talking during the ceremony in Madrid yesterday. “I don’t think anyone can argue with Inter’s sporting achievements this year, above all there is the UEFA Champions League – which has been cited as the main reason for their nomination – but there are also all the other trophies won by the club, with the latest being the FIFA Club World Cup.”
