Fourth, record qualifying round appearance for Inter

Inter play a Champions League qualifying round tie for the fourth time - a record for an Italian club. The Nerazzurri, who previously held the record with Parma , got through the qualifying round in 1998/99 with 4- 0 and 3-1 victories over Skonto Riga and in 2002/03 with a 2-0 win and a 0-0 draw against Sporting Lisbon. Inter were eliminated by Helsingborg in 2000/01. They lost 1-0 in Sweden and drew 0-0 in the return leg at the San Siro.

Qualifying round appearance record also for Mancini

Roberto Mancini joins Carlo Ancelotti as the Italian coach who has played the most Champions League qualifying round ties. Before the two-legged clash with Basel, Mancini coached Lazio to 3-1 and 1-0 victories over Benfica last year. Ancelotti got through the preliminary round while in charge of Parma in 1997/98 and as AC Milan coach in 2002/03.

Mancini has already eliminated Gross, but without playing...

The duel between Mancini and Basel coach Christian Gross is renewed after ten years. In October 1994 Sampdoria (where Mancini was a player) beat Grasshoppers (coached by Gross) 3-0 at the Marassi in a Cup Winners' Cup first leg then lost the return match 3-2 in Zurich. Mancini progressed to the next round with Sampdoria but didn't play in either match against the Swiss.

Inter, Mancini okay with Poll

English referee Graham Poll will take charge of a European cup competition match involving an Italian team for the 15th time, with 9 Italian victories, 3 draws and 2 defeats from the other 14 matches. He will referee Inter for the second time after the 3-1 win over AEK Athens in the 2001/02 Uefa Cup. Mancini has had Poll as a referee both as a player and a coach: Bayer Leverkusen 1-1 Lazio in the 1999/00 Champions League, Besiktas 1-2 Lazio in the 2002/03 Uefa Cup.

Third two-legged tie between Basel and Italian clubs

Basel face an Italian side in European cup competitions for the third time. In the 1968/69 Fairs/ Uefa Cup they were eliminated by Bologna, losing 4-1 in Emilia-Romagna and 2-1 in the return leg. In the first group stage of the 2002/03 Champions League Basel beat Juventus 2-1 at home and lost 4-0 away. In 26 Alpine Cup matches against 16 different Italian teams, Basel recorded 8 victories, 3 draws and 15 defeats.

Basel on target in last 18 European home matches

Inter's Champions League third qualifying round opponents have scored at least one goal 18 European home matches, for a total of 41 goals. The last time they failed to score at home in Europe was on 4 July 1999 when they were held to a 0-0 draw by Boby in the Intertoto competition.

Basel goalless in only one European Cup/ Champions League home match

In their history Basel have played 19 home European Cup/ Champions League matches, failing to score on just one occasion. That was on 17 September 1969 when they drew 0-0 with Glasgow Celtic. The Swiss side have scored a total of 43 goals in the other 18 home matches.

No Inter away win in Europe since September 2003

The Nerazzurri haven't won a European away match since 17 September 2003 when they beat Arsenal 3-0 in the Champions League group stage. Since then Inter have recorded 3 draws and 2 defeats.

BASEL - Inter drew 1-1 with Basel in Wednesday evening's Champions League qualifying round first leg at the St. Jakob Park Stadion.

The home side made the better start, but the Nerazzurri soon settled down and Adriano fired Inter ahead in the 19th minute. Recoba intelligently let Stankovic's left-wing pass roll through to the Brazilian striker, who powered between two Basel defenders then skipped past Zuberbuhler before smashing a right-footed shot into the roof of the net.

Six minutes later Basel equalised through Huggel, who from a central position on the edge of the six-yard box headed home Rossi's acrobatic cross with Toldo stranded at the near post.

Inter twice hit the woodwork before the half was out. Stankovic saw his long-range shot come off the left-hand post, then Ze Maria hit the crossbar from eight yards after Zuberbuhler blocked Adriano's shot.

Basel enjoyed the run of play in the second half and could have taken a 2-1 lead going into next week's return leg at the San Siro when goalscorer Huggel received in space to the right of the Inter goal then saw his shot come off the far post.
