Empoli in cup quarters for third time

Empoli are taking part in the Coppa Italia for the 27th time in their history, and have never gone past the quarter-final stage. Before this season the Azzurri reached the last eight in 1985/86 (knocked out by Fiorentina) and 1987/88 (eliminated by Inter).

Empoli: record run in Coppa

Empoli haven't lost a Coppa Italia match since their 5-3 defeat at Torino on 22 August 2004. Since that date the Tuscans have collected 4 wins and 2 draws - a new record run for the club in the domestic cup after the 4 wins and 1 draw between September 1983 and September 1984.

No cup goal against Empoli for 258 minutes

Simplicio's 42nd-minute penalty conversion in Empoli 1-1 Parma (a.e.t) on 21 August 2005 was the last Coppa Italia goal conceded by the Tuscan outfit. Including the remaining 78 minutes of that match plus both round of 16 games against Genoa, Empoli have not let in a cup goal for 258 minutes.

Inter unbeaten in 20 games

Inter are unbeaten in 20 competitive games, with 17 wins (including 11 consecutive victories, a club record under the administration of Moratti) and 3 draws since their last defeat, a 2-0 home loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League on 27 September 2006.

Inter on target in 16 consecutive games

Mancini's team have scored at least one goal in each of their last 16 competitive matches, netting a total of 34 goals. Inter's last match without scoring was the goalless Serie A draw at Udinese on 22 October 2006.

No Inter defeat in Coppa Italia since 2002

Inter 1-2 Bari on 19 December 2002 was the Nerazzurri's last defeat in Italy's cup competition. Since that date Inter have collected 15 wins and 9 draws from 24 games to better the previous record of 20 cup matches without defeat, set between May 1986 and April 1988. With 13 wins and 5 draws, Roberto Mancini is unbeaten in the Coppa Italia since taking over at Inter.

EMPOLI - Inter take a two-goal lead into next week's Tim Cup quarter-final return leg with Empoli after a 2-0 victory at the Stadio Castellani.

The Nerazzurri dominated for long stretches of their first competitive fixture of the new year as Adriano started 2007 as he ended 2006, with a well-taken second-half goal to give further confirmation he's returning to his best.

Substitute Ivan Cordoba headed in the second in added time to give Inter a comfortable cushion ahead of next Wednesday's clash at the Meazza.

Luis Figo had a goal ruled out on 21 minutes after his indirect free sailed over the Empoli rearguard, out of Bassi's reach and into the left corner.

Mancini's men went close again twenty minutes later when Patrick Vieira had a header cleared off the line by Marzoratti after Bassi's one-handed clearance from an Adriano cross.

Right on the stroke of half time Zlatan Ibrahimovic tested the Empoli custodian with a crisp left-foot shot from inside the Tuscan box.

Francesco Toldo was rarely troubled in the opening period as the Empoli strikers failed to capitalise on a series of decent balls into his area.

Inter stepped up a gear after the restart, producing chance after chance. Adriano sidefooted wide an Ibrahimovic low cross before Vieira had a near range effort blocked by Bassi after receiving from Adriano.

Ibra then had a close-range shot hooked clear by Vanigli before Matteini sent a curler just wide after a quick one-two involving Marianini and Buzzegoli.

The inevitable breakthrough came on 71 minutes when Adriano (who ended his goal drought against Atalanta in the last game before the Christmas break, and added two more in the friendly match against Bahrain) ran on to Ibrahimovic's pin-point through ball before lobbing the onrushing Bassi.

Adriano was denied a second soon after by Bassi, who pushed the Brazilian's bullet header from Figo's free kick on to the post.

Empoli's best chance of an equaliser fell to Gasparetto, who outjumped Cordoba to head narrowly over Toldo's crossbar. The Colombian defender made amends in added time, rising in the Tuscan box to send a looping header from Mariano Gonzalez' cross over Bassi and into the back of the net.
