Mancini v Benitez

Liverpool's 2-0 win over Inter in the first leg of the 2007/08 UCL last 16 is the only previous meeting between the two coaches.

Inter v English teams

Including their two-legged European Cup semi-final against Liverpool in 1964/65, Inter have faced English teams in European cup competitions on 25 occasions, winning 9, drawing 5 and losing 11. The Nerazzurri have also faced English opposition 4 times in the Anglo-Italian Cup (1 Inter win, 2 draws and 1 defeat).

Liverpool v Italian clubs

The Reds face an Italian club for 19th time after 6 wins, 4 draws and 8 defeats. Four of these matches have been European Cup/Champions League finals. Liverpool lifted the trophy after a penalties victory over Roma at the Olimpico in 1983/84, repeating the success in 2004/05 after an incredible comeback against AC Milan. They lost out to Juventus in 1984/85 and AC Milan in 2006/07. Liverpool have played one European Super Cup against Italian opposition, losing to Juventus in 1985.

Just one home defeat for Inter in last 13 UCL home games...

The Nerazzurri have lost just one of their last 13 Champions League games at San Siro: Inter 0-2 Bayern Munich on 27 September 2006. Mancini's team have garnered 10 wins (including 3 out of last 3) and 2 draws from the other 12 home games.

...and just one without scoring

That 2-0 reverse against Bayern was the only time the Nerazzurri have failed to score at home in their last 13 Champions League fixtures. Inter have notched a total of 25 goals in the other 12 games.

Inter unbeaten at home since August 2007

The Nerazzurri's 1-0 defeat to Roma in the Italian Super Cup on 19 August 2007 was their last home defeat. Mancini's men have since collected 16 wins and 3 draws from 19 matches at San Siro, scoring in each match (total 46 goals).

Inter through 3 times out of 8 after 2-0 defeat from first leg

For the ninth time in their history Inter go into a European return match after a 2-0 away defeat from the first leg. The Nerazzurri have qualified on three occasions (Inter 5-1 Groningen in 1983/84 UEFA Cup, Inter 3-0 Aston Villa in 1990/91 UEFA Cup; Inter 3-0 San Siro in 1997/98 UEFA Cup), failing to reach the next round on five occasions (Inter 3-3 Valencia in 1961/62 Fairs Cup; Inter 1-0 Vitoria Setubal in 1972/73 UEFA Cup; Inter 1-0 Real Madrid in 1980/81 European Cup; Inter 1-1 Manchester United in 1998/98 Champions League; Inter 0-3 AC Milan - forfeit win, match abandoned in 73rd minute, in 2004/05 Champions League).

Liverpool goalless in one of last 11 Euro games

Liverpool have failed to score in just one of their last 11 European fixtures - the 0-1 home loss to Olympique Marseille in the group phases last 3 October. They have scored a total of 27 goals in the other 10 matches.

Liverpool always through after 2-0 win from first leg at home

For the fifth time in their history Liverpool go into a European cup return leg after a 2-0 win from the first leg. In the 1966/67 European Cup they lost 3-1 at Romanian side Petrolul Ploiesti, qualifying for the next round after winning a replay in Brussels. In the first round of the 1972/73 UEFA Cup they drew 0-0 with Eintracht Frankfurt, while in the quarter-finals they beat Dinamo Dresden 1-0. Liverpool won 5-0 against Crusaders in Belfast in the first round of the 1976/77 European Cup. They beat Levski Sofia 4-2 in the third round of the 2003/04 UEFA Cup.

The ref: Ovrebo

Norwegian official Tom Henning Ovrebo, born on 26 June 1966, has been an international referee since 1994. So far this season he has taken charge of four European matches (Lazio 1-1 Dinamo Bucharest in UCL qualifying round, and Lyon 0-3 Rangers, Real Madrid 4-2 Olympiakos and AC Milan 1-0 Celtic in the group stages). Ovrebo has refereed Italian clubs on seven occasions. There have been 3 Italian wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats. He has never taken charge of an Inter fixture before, but has refereed the Reds on one occasion (Bordeaux 0-1 Liverpool in the 2006/07 UCL group stage).

MILAN - Inter exit the Champions League at the round of 16 stage as Liverpool followed up their 2-0 win at Anfield with a 1-0 victory at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

Fernando Torres scored after Nicolas Burdisso was sent off to see the Reds join Arsenal, Barcelona, Chelsea, Fenerbahçe, Manchester United, Roma and Schalke 04 in the quarter-finals.

Mancini's team had the better chances in the first half, with Julio Cruz testing Reina with a low effort before he sent an angled drive inches wide.

Inter's difficult task was made even harder five minutes after the restart when Burdisso was given his marching orders for a second yellow after a foul on Lucas Leiva.

Ibrahimovic went close to reducing the gap, his low effort from the right edge of the box finishing a whisker wide.

Liverpool secured victory on 64 minutes when Torres fired a crisp shot past Julio Cesar after collecting Fabio Aurelio's assist and swivelling on the edge of the box.

The Reds could have added to their lead but Julio Cesar pulled off a terrific save from Benayoun.
