Extra time on only five previous occasions

No European Super Cup has ever gone to penalties. In 55 games there have been 46 victories and 9 draws, with 136 goals scored. There has been extra time on just five occasions: in 1982 Aston Villa beat Barcelona 3-0 a.e.t. following a 1-0 first-leg defeat to the Catalans; in 1993 AC Milan lost 2-0 to Parma after their 1-0 away win at the Tardini; in 2000 Galatasaray defeated 2-1 with a golden goal in extra time; in 2005 Liverpool beat CSKA Moscow 3-1 a.e.t.; and in 2009 Barcelona overcame Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 with an extra-time goal.

Benitez aiming to make European Super Cup history

Only five coaches have won the UEFA Super Cup twice. In chronological order, they are: Raymond Goethals (Anderlecht in 1976 and 1978) Arrigo Sacchi (AC Milan in 1989 and 1990), Sir Alex Ferguson (Aberdeen in 1983 and Manchester United in 1991), Louis Van Gaal (Ajax in 1995 and Barcelona in 1997) and Carlo Ancelotti (AC Milan in 2003 and 2007). Should Inter win, Rafa Benitez would become the sixth coach, and the first Spaniard, to win two UEFA Super Cups. He won it for the first time in 2005 when Liverpool beat CSKA Moscow 3-1.

Italian success in Super Cups dated 27 August

This year's UEFA Super Cup will take place on 27 August - the third time the competition has been played on this date. The previous two games were one-off matches in Monte Carlo, and there is an Italian element of success in both. In 1999 Sven Goran Eriksson led Cup Winners' Cup holders Lazio to a 1-0 victory over Alex Ferguson's Manchester United, Salas scoring the winner on 35 minutes. In the 2004 edition Italian coach Claudio Ranieri led UEFA Cup holders Valencia to a 2-1 win against Porto. Baraja and Di Vaio (now at Bologna) scored for the Spaniards in the 31st and 67th minutes, with Quaresma netting for Porto in the 77th.

Inter: eight wins out of twelve in international finals

Inter have played 12 international finals in their history, winning 8 trophies and finishing runners-up on 4 occasions. The Nerazzurri won the European Cup/Champions League in 1963/64 (3-1 victory over Real Madrid in Vienna - Mazzola 43', 76', Milani 62'; Felo 70'), 1964/65 (1-0 win against Benfica in Milan - Jair da Costa 42') and 2009/10 (2-0 win over Bayern Munich - Milito 34', 70'), losing in 1966/67 (1-2 to Celtic in Lisbon - Mazzola pen 6'; Gemmel 63', Chalmers 83') and 1971/72 (0-2 to Ajax in Rotterdam - Cruyff 48', 77'). Besides the European Cup, Inter have won 2 Intercontinental Cups (both against Independiente in 1964 and 1965) and 3 UEFA Cups (2-1 on aggregate against Roma in 1990/9; 2-0 on aggregate against Salzburg in 1993/94; and 3-0 win against Lazio in Paris in 1997/98). Inter were beaten by Schalke 04 after penalties in the 1996/97 UEFA Cup final. Under the name of Ambrosiana in the Fascism era, Inter lost 4-3 on aggregate to Austria Vienna in the Mitropa Cup, also known as the Central European Cup.

27th August bodes well for Inter

Inter play a competitive fixture on 27 August for the eighth time in their history after seven straight wins: 6-0 at home to Atalanta (Serie A) in 1961; 1-0 at home to Catanzaro (Coppa Italia) in 1972; 2-0 away to Terni (Coppa Italia) in 1975; 4-1 away to Catania (Coppa Italia) in 1986; 2-1 at home to Cremonese (Serie A) in 1989; 1-0 at home to Vicenza (Serie A) in 1995; and 2-0 at home to Sporting Lisbon (Champions League qualifying round) in 2002.

Atletico: 3 trophies, 3 defeats in 6 previous finals

Atletico Madrid have played six international finals in their history, winning 3 and losing 3. Their three triumphs came in the 1961/62 Cup Winners' Cup final (3-0 replay victory over Fiorentina on 5 September 1962 in Stuttgart - Jones 8', Mendonça 27', Peiro 59', after a 1-1 extra-time draw on 10 May 1962 in Glasgow - Peiro 11'; Hamrin 27'); the 1975 Intercontinental Cup final against Independiente (1-0 defeat in Argentina in first leg - Balbuena 13'; 2-0 victory in Spain in return leg - Irureta 21', Ayala 86'); and the inaugural Europa League final in 2009/10 (2-1 extra-time win over Fulham - Forlan 32', 116'; Davies 37'). Atletico were runners-up in the 1962/63 Cup Winners' Cup final (1-5 against Tottenham in Rotterdam); the 1973/74 European Cup final (0-4 replay defeat to Bayern Munich in Brussels after 1-1 extra-time draw in first game); and the 1985/86 Cup Winners' Cup final (0-3 against Dynamo Kiev in Lyon).

One Atletico defeat in last nine Euro games

Atletico Madrid have lost just one of their last nine European games: last season's Europa League semi-final return leg at Liverpool on 29 April 2010. The Reds, led by current Inter boss Rafa Benitez, won 2-1 after extra time on the night but eventual competition winners Atletico progressed through to the final on the away goals rule. Atletico have won three and drawn five of the other eight games.

The ref: Massimo Busacca

The 2010 UEFA Super Cup between Inter and Atletico Madrid will be refereed by Swiss official Massimo Busacca. At the Stade Louis II in Monte Carlo, he will be assisted by assistant referees Arnet and Navarro, fourth official Kever, and additional assistant referees Studer and Zinnerman. A FIFA referee since 1999, 41-year-old Busacca takes charge of a competitive fixture involving Inter for the second time after last season's Champions League Matchday 5 clash between Barcelona and Inter at the Camp Nou.

MONTE CARLO - A counter-attacking Colchoneros side got the better of Inter at the Stade Louis II to lift the 2010 UEFA Super Cup.

José Antonio Reyes and Sergio Aguero got their names on the scoresheet in the second half as Atletico made their chances count in European football's curtain raiser.

With time running out Diego Milito had a penalty kick saved by David De Gea.

Rafael Benitez made one change from the starting XI that won us the Champions League and the Italian Super Cup, bringing in Dejan Stankovic for Goran Pandev.

Quique Sanchez Flores also made a single switch from the team that beat Fulham to win the inaugural Europa League, summer signing Diego Godin replacing Antonio Lopez at the centre of defence.

An evenly-balanced first half saw Samuel head over and Eto'o fire narrowly wide before two good chances for Aguero - one inches off target and the other well wide.

It was more Spain than Italy in the second half as Atletico found more space on the break, and Reyes broke the deadlock on 62 minutes. He combined swiftly with Aguero and rounded Maicon before firing past Julio Cesar at his near post.

Inter reverted to their Champions League-winning lineup with Pandev on for Stankovic and the Macedonian fired against the bar after De Gea had thwarted Milito, but the flag had already been raised for offside.

Another change was needed and Benitez handed brought on Coutinho for Sneijder.

The 18-year-old Brazilian barely had time to settle on his competitive debut when Aguero doubled Atletico's lead from close range, slotting Simao's cross over the line.

Inter were presented with a chance to reduce the arrears in the closing minutes after Raul Garcia brought down Pandev in the area, but Milito's spot-kick was saved by De Gea.
