Franco Aloisio, together with “Parada”, has worked to help some of the most vulnerable children in the Romanian capital. Here he tells the story of his work with the Nerazzurri in this project

Bucharest - "When I first got in touch with the Italian Embassy in Bucharest to meet President Massimo Moratti - who I knew was visiting the capital on business - I was just excited as a huge Inter fan, I had no idea that that meeting, which took place in 2011, would give way to the Inter Campus Bucharest Project, which is still active today.”

The story of Franco Aloisio, a local partner who has lived in the Romanian capital for more than twenty years, is a story of international cooperation, and one to which he has dedicated himself since the 1990s. He started in Milan as an educator for children and young people on the street, then moved onto similar projects in Nepal, Somalia, Palestine and Gaza until his arrival in Bucharest and his subsequent decision to move there permanently in 2005.

Franco, founder and president of the Association which has been helping boys and girls on the streets of Bucharest since 1996, said: "Parada gives human and social support using tools such as social arts, especially that of the circus, as well as providing school and health services, mobile units and a daycare centre.

“Something on which we have focused from the very beginning is the fact that football for Inter Campus, just like the circus for "Parada", is an instrument. The common goal has never been to train footballers or circus artists but to use these tools to have a soft approach to poverty and to give the recipients the opportunity to identify and enhance their skills and find a context in which to develop them. The challenge, taking into account the fact that "Parada" works with subjects on the fringes of society and that Inter Campus creates projects to give stability and continuity, was huge, but thanks to football we managed to build a relationship with the boys on which we could build an educational project.

“I still remember the first time we handed out kits, a very exciting moment for everyone but at the same time there was a need to clarify the rules to the children. When it was Ricky’s turn, a street boy with a well-known reputation, it was only natural to tell him that we were giving him Inter's shirt and shorts and that at the end of training he would have to give them back in, and that he would then get them back if he returned to play football regularly... Ricky turned to me and said "Franco, let's clarify one thing, I'm here to have fun, if I wanted to steal everything from you I would have stolen it already and you wouldn't have even noticed...” It was at that moment that I understood that a dialogue and a relationship could be built... we were on the right track...!”
