The Coach's analysis after Inter's win at the Marassi: "The start of the second half could have destroyed us, but the lads kept up the fight and demonstrated that we're on the right path"

GENOA - Antonio Conte’s Inter side have maintained their perfect record: the Nerazzurri sit on 18 points after their win away to Sampdoria on matchday six.

Goals from Sensi, Sanchez and Gagliardini proved decisive at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, with Jankto’s goal to make it 2-1 only being a brief setback after Inter’s number 7 had been sent off. This is what the Coach had to say following the match: “I’m certainly satisfied with the performance and the win. When you play matches where you show this much clarity in your ideas and create so many chances, you need to put the game to bed earlier. The first half ended with us 2-0 up, but we could have scored more. Then, at the beginning of the second half, the unexpected happened: we could have made it 3-0 but were reduced to ten men instead and conceded a goal. This key moment could have destroyed any other side, but the lads kept up the fight and managed to find a balance again after some changes were made. We scored the third goal despite being a man down and we could have scored a fourth through Lukaku.

“I’m happy with how the lads interpreted the match,” Conte added. “We were dominating the game and everything changed in an instant. There was a risk that the lads would collapse, but they stuck to the task and showed that we’re on the right path in terms of our mentality. My glass is half full, it’s a step forward when it comes to our attitude. Certain situations strengthen you, even if we deserved to experience the match in a different way from an emotional viewpoint due to how we went about things. The lads deserve applause, now we’ll enjoy the win but we need to immediately prepare for the away trip to Barcelona.

Finally, the Coach commented on the league table, with Inter sitting on top on maximum points: “We need to fly under the radar and take it game by game. Only time will tell what our journey will look like and the ambitions we could have.”

The Coach then spoke to Inter TV: “I made changes but we’d spent a lot of energy. We will need to do well in terms of recuperating ahead of our next match against Barcelona. When you’re down one man, it’s inevitable that you’ll drop back so you don’t give the opposition too much space. This happens whether you want it to or not. It’s difficult playing with ten against eleven, but no one is ill-equipped. We dropped back, but Romelu coming on allowed us to keep Sampdoria at bay because he’s good at keeping the ball and running into space. Candreva was fantastic in the first half, but with D’Ambrosio there was someone who could provide more cover. Barella also did well when he came on.

“The more I work with these lads, the more they absorb this knowledge. We’ve been working in a big way since the first day we got to work, I need to thank them because these six wins are the result of hard work but also their willingness to do whatever the staff asked from the beginning. I’m happy when the lads are able to read what’s going on out on the pitch.

"Bastoni? Half of Serie A wanted him, but I didn’t want him to be loaned out. I wanted to work with him because I saw his potential, he does what I ask of him. He’ll certainly be part of the future, but he’s already an alternative for the present.”
