Goals for Candreva, Karamoh, Gervinho and Lukaku: the Nerazzurri are now on 22 points

MILAN - Inter played with great heart for all 97 minutes of this match but ultimately it wasn’t enough. Inter drew for the first time in the league this season as Parma held them to a 2-2 draw at San Siro. It was a pulsating match, and the Nerazzurri were looking to turn their single point into three throughout the match right until the final moments as they emptied their reserves of energy in their hunt for a third goal. It was a decent effort by the team even if they were lacking cohesion in the final moments, but close encounters like these take a toll on the players out there on the pitch. But despite this their attempt to win the game was clearly there. It was desperate and last-minute and ultimately unsuccessful.

Due to a lack of fit striking options D’Aversa lined his team up in a 4-3-3 with Kulusevski playing a false-nine role and Gervinho and Karamoh playing close to him and ready to attack the Inter defence. It was a smart game plan that Inter had to reckon with. The visitors started well with Dermaku testing Handanovic from a corner, who did well to parry the shot. In those first ten minutes the Crociati carried a real attacking threat. You could see the effects of the Nerazzurri’s midweek exertions but the key figures from that match started to step up to the challenge once again. Lautaro received the ball from Gagliardini but Sepe saved his shot. Then Candreva repeated his European heroics and got on the scoresheet again. This time it was a left-footed shot following a corner. The ball found its way into the back of the net, courtesy of a big deflection off Dermaku and Inter took a 1-0 lead. However that lead barely lasted a moment.

It only took five minutes for Parma to respond. Parma’s forwards exploited two moments of indecision from Brozovic and stole the ball of the Croatian and burst forward with devastating attacking skill. Karamoh crashed home a shot from the edge of the area for Parma’s first in the 26th minute. The ex-Nerazzurri then turned provider; a swift counterattack ended with Karamoh looking up to see Gervinho totally unmarked inside the area. He gave him the ball and Gervinho duly gave Parma the lead.

The two blows in quick succession knocked the wind out of Inter and asked real questions of their defensive organisation. However Conte’s team didn’t turn on the system, even if they were struggling to find attacking outlets. Lautaro went close with a header in the 47th minute but Parma held onto their lead.

It was a different story in the second half as the Nerazzurri came out with all guns blazing. Spurred on by more than 67,000 fans at San Siro, Antonio Conte’s men pressed high and drew level. Brozovic found Candreva, the ball was played to Lukaku and the Belgian striker did the rest. The goal was actually scored in the 51st minute but the Meazza had to wait a further four minutes for it to be given due to a lengthy VAR check. In the end, Chiffi awarded it and San Siro duly erupted. Having grabbed the equaliser, Inter went in search of a third. Immediately afterwards, Dermaku made a crucial intervention to deny Lautaro just when the Argentine striker was taking aim. The same forward also headed off target as the Nerazzurri continued to push forward. Meanwhile, Parma were looking to counter quickly through Karamoh and Gervinho, both of whom were proving to be big threats.

The closing stages were all one-way traffic and the chances for Inter kept on coming: Candreva fired a rocket over the bar in the 76th minute, while Lukaku had an opportunity a minute later. With 89 minutes on the clock, De Vrij headed just wide. As a result of the long VAR check, seven minutes were added on at the end. And in stoppage time, Esposito (after coming on at the age of 17 years and 116 days, he became the fourth youngest Nerazzurri player to make his Serie A debut since ‘94/’95 after Federico Bonazzoli, Goran Slavkovski and Matteo Ferrari) came inches away from winning it as his volley from a corner whistled just wide of the post. And the youngster had another chance too, heading over with just seconds remaining.

Inter were forced to settle for a draw that Conte’s men might have a few regrets over given their late assault on the Parma goal. However, the Nerazzurri once again showed the character of a side that never gives up. Inter remain second and now sit on 22 points as they look towards their next match: it’s Brescia at the Rigamonti on Tuesday. Let’s keep going, #ForzaInter forever!
