THE MATCH

What a crazy game. The first of a season that would end with Inter winning the Club’s 15th Scudetto. There were many new faces at San Siro: Fabio Grosso, Douglas Maicon (who came on as a sub), Patrick Vieira, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Olivier Dacourt (who also came off the bench) all made their Nerazzurri debuts. What’s more, Hernan Crespo was back wearing Inter’s shirt.

Mancini scored in the 15th minute, then Aquilani netted twice in the 25th and 34th and Inter already seemed dead and buried three goals down. The only saving grace of the first half was Patrick Vieira’s debut goal to make it 3-1 before the break. Hernan Crespo’s entrance was a catalyst in the second half as he scored a wonderful header to make it 3-2 and inject life back into the contest. With quarter of an hour to go, Patrick Vieira struck again to level the score at 3-3. But it wasn’t over then…

With the clock ticking into the fourth minute in the first half of extra time, Luis Figo produced a peach of a free kick to beat Doni, which meant that the Nerazzurri were 4-3 winners and lifted the Italian Super Cup!
