LIVERPOOL – Inter claimed victory away to Liverpool for the first time in the club’s history at the third attempt, but the win at Anfield wasn’t quite enough to secure a place in the Champions League quarter-finals. Simone Inzaghi’s side ran out 1-0 winners on the night, but were unable to overturn the 2-0 deficit from the first leg at San Siro in February.

The Nerazzurri made a good start to the contest, but nearly fell behind twice in the 31st minute when Joel Matip’s header crashed against the ball before Milan Skriniar got in a crucial block to thwart Virgil van Dijk. Inter’s only clearcut chance in the first half was a Hakan Calhanoglu free kick that Alisson kept out.

Liverpool struck the frame of the goal again early on in the second half when Mo Salah’s effort rebounded off the post when the ball fell to him after a fine save by Samir Handanovic. Inter took the lead with 62 minutes on the clock when Calhanoglu and Alexis Sanchez linked up down the left before releasing Lautaro, whose unstoppable right-footed strike flew into the top corner. What a goal to put Inter ahead! One minute later, however, the visitors were down to ten men as Sanchez was shown a second yellow card and given his marching orders.

Inter were unable to create the same amount of danger with ten men, while Liverpool hit the woodwork once again through Salah and Arturo Vidal kept the clean sheet intact in stoppage time with a stunning last-ditch block to keep out Luis Diaz.

It ended in a 1-0 victory on the night for the visitors, but it’s Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool that head through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
