MILAN - Inter's senior youth team beat Siena 2-1 in the second leg of their Trofeo Giacinto Facchetti last sixteen tie but the Tuscan outfit qualify for the final phase of the competition on the away goals rule after a 1-0 win from the first leg.
Vincenzo Esposito's Nerazzurri showed great spirit and determination in their attempt to reach the playoffs, coming from behind to defeat the Bianconeri in Milan with goals from Daminuta and Giacomelli, but Giannetti's efforts at home and away ensured Siena a place in the final eight.
To overturn the 1-0 deficit from the first leg Esposito fielded Napoli and Bocalon up front, with Antonio Esposito coming in for Fortunato alongside Obi, Gerbo and Krhin in midfield, and a back four of Donati, Daminuta, Mei and Caldirola giving protection to goalkeeper Belec.
Inter won a free kick 30 seconds after kick-off, Daminuta seeing his shot punched clear by Ivanov - one of Siena's best players in the first leg. The Bianconeri hit back and Larrondo struck the post in the 2nd minute before firing wide from distance in the 10th.
Siena went close again in the 18th and 21st minutes, Belec making a diving save from Buchel before Arroe's lob forced a clearance off the line from Donati. Sustained pressure from the visitors paid dividends in the 22nd minute when Giannetti found the net with an overhead kick, leaving Inter needing to score three to qualify.
Larrondo severely tested Belec as Siena looked to increase their lead before half time, but the Nerazzurri fought back strong. Captain Aiman Napoli fired a left-foot shot wide, Caldirola sent a diving header from Daminuta's cross on to the post, and Napoli had a goal ruled out a minute before the break.
Inter Primavera coach Esposito, who brought on Giacomelli and Beretta for Donati and Antonio Esposito in the first half, made his third and final change at the start of the second, introducing Destro for Bocalon.
The Nerazzurri's equaliser came eleven minutes after the restart when Daminuta found the top corner with a trademark free kick. Giacomelli made it 2-1 in the 68th, slotting home after Ivanov failed to hold Beretta's shot. Inter went close to scoring a third with fiften minutes remaining but Destro shot wide from close range.
Inter's youngsters battled hard until the final whistle but that third goal didn't come and it's Siena who will take part in the Trofeo Giacinto Facchetti playoffs in Valsugana from 1-8 June.
