MILAN - Javier Zanetti's splendid opening goal in last night's victory over Tottenham Hotspur was his second in the UEFA Champions League. The Inter skipper scored his first goal in Europe's élite competition for clubs in the 63rd minute of a 2-0 away win over Sturm Graz on 9 December 1998 - almost 12 years ago. His former team-mate Roberto Baggio netted Inter's second goal 16 minutes later.
That goal in Austria wasn't the last time Zanetti had scored in Europe before last night. His netted the equalising goal in the 14th minute of a UEFA Cup tie against Greek outfit AEK Athens to cancel out Zagorakis' opener. Kallon and Ventola added to Zanetti's goal as Inter went on to complete a 3-1 victory in Milan.
Before Wednesday's opener against Spurs, Zanetti's last goal for Inter was a decisive penalty kick (the first of his career) in the Italian Super Cup win over Roma on 24 August 2008. The game went to penalties after a 2-2 extra-time draw.
