MOSCOW - Inter still lead Group B of the Champions League despite suffering a 3-0 defeat by Lokomotiv Moscow early on Tuesday evening.

Caretaker coach Verdelli fielded a 4-3-1-2 formation for the Matchday 3 clash, with Recoba in a playmaker position behind strikers Cruz and Vieri, and the Nerazzurri were first forward in the opening seconds when Brechet set up Cruz with a scoring chance.

But the Russians stormed forward immediately and took a shock lead in the second minute through Dmitri Loskov, who fired into the roof of the net after getting on the end of Lekcetho's low cross.

Inter reacted strongly, maintaining more ball possession and creating more scoring chances than their opponents. The best opportunity fell to Javier Zanetti who, when presented with an open goal in the 27th minute, fired inexplicably over the bar.

Lokomotiv redoubled their lead five minutes after the restart. Unmarked at the far post, Ahsvetia tapped home Evseev's right-wing cross. Khoklov then completed the rout after 57 minutes with the best goal of the evening. The midfielder rose above the Nerazzurri defence to head Loskov's deep cross out of Toldo's reach and into the top left-hand corner.

Four minutes after the third goal, Verdelli brought on Emre and Martins for Cruz and Materazzi and the Nerazzurri continued to enjoy more ball possession. Inter came closest to pulling a goal back with little over five minutes remaining when Vieri's header from Recoba's left-wing free kick hit the crossbar.
