Previous matches between Inter and Basel

After the 1-1 draw in Switzerland two weeks ago, the Nerazzurri face Basel for the second time in Tuesday's Champions League third qualifying round return leg.

In detail:

2004/05 Champions L. Inter-Basel ---- 1-1

Previous matches between Basel and Italian clubs

Away to Inter on Tuesday Basel play their sixth European cup competition match against an Italian club. In 1968/69 the Swiss outfit were beaten by Bologna, then played Juventus twice in the Champions League first group stage in 2002/03 before entertaining Inter two weeks ago in the first of the two qualifying round legs. Basel have recorded 1 win, 1 draw and 3 defeats, and have conceded at least one goal in each of these 5 matches (total 12 goals let in). Basel let in 4 goals in each of their trips to Italy.

In detail:

1968/69 Fairs/Uefa Cup Basel-Bologna 1-2 1-4
2002/03 Champions L. Basel-Juventus 2-1 0-4
2004/05 Champions L. Basel-Inter 1-1 ----

Fourth, record qualifying round appearance for Inter

Inter play a Champions League qualifying round tie for the fourth time - a record for an Italian club. The Nerazzurri, who previously held the record with Parma , got through the qualifying round in 1998/99 with 4- 0 and 3-1 victories over Skonto Riga and in 2002/03 with a 2-0 win and a 0-0 draw against Sporting Lisbon. Inter were eliminated by Helsingborg in 2000/01. They lost 1-0 in Sweden and drew 0-0 in the return leg at the San Siro.

Qualifying round appearance record for Mancini

Roberto Mancini joins Carlo Ancelotti as the Italian coach who has played the most Champions League qualifying round ties. Before the two-legged clash with Basel, Mancini coached Lazio to 3-1 and 1-0 victories over Benfica last year. Ancelotti got through the preliminary round while in charge of Parma in 1997/98 and as AC Milan coach in 2002/03.

Record number of qualifiers for Cannavaro

Fabio Cannavaro has played more Champions League qualifying round matches than any other player at an Italian club (6 matches). The Nerazzurri defender has played 5 qualifiers with Parma (2 in 1997/98, 1 in 1999/00 and 2 in 2001/02) and 1 with Inter (in 2002/03). Four other Inter players are 1 match away from equalling Cannavaro's record, Toldo, Recoba, Cordoba and Javier Zanetti having each played 5 qualifying round games. The goalkeeper has played 2 matches with Fiorentina and 3 with Inter, while the others have played their Champions League qualifiers exclusively for Inter. Juventus goalkeeper Buffon and defender Thuram are also one match away from reaching Cannavaro.

Basel always out after 1-1 draws from first legs

Inter don't have a good record in home return-leg European cup competition matches after drawing first legs 1-1, but Basel's record is worse. The Swiss have been knocked out each time they have drawn a first-leg match 1-1. In the 1961/62 Fairs/Uefa Cup they beaten 4-1 by Red Star Belgrade, then lost 3-1 to Atletico Bilbao in the 1976/77 Uefa Cup before losing 4-1 to Aston Villa in the 2001/02 Intertoto competition.

MILAN - Adriano and Dejan Stankovic inspired the Nerazzurri to a 4-1 win at home Basel on Tuesday evening to secure an aggregate 5-2 victory which sees Inter through to the group stage of the Champions League.

Roberto Mancini promised an attacking game, and Inter's intentions were clear from the outset. Recoba shot at Basel keeper Zuberbuhler after fifteen seconds, then before the first minute was up Inter took the lead through Adriano, whose diagonal shot from a Stankovic assist found the bottom right-hand corner of the net.

Inter's second came in the 13th minute when Recoba laid the ball off to Adriano who squared to Stankovic. From the edge of the Basel box the Serb sent a right-footed screamer past Zuberbuhler.

January signings Adriano and Stankovic combined again minutes later, the Brazilian's shot finishing just off-target, then once again when the midfielder shot wide from an inviting position inside the Swiss penalty area.

Basel came up against a black and blue wall each time they moved forward and only penetrated it once in the opening period when Yakin's free kick from 20 yards forced a terrific save out of Toldo.

Basel's breakthrough came just after the restart when Kleber's left-wing cross rolled through to Sterjovski, who turned Stankovic then blasted past Toldo. But Inter's reply was instant and Adriano stunned the Swiss with his second strike to restore the Nerazzurri's two-goal advantage - a low, left-footed drive which found the bottom right-hand corner. Alvaro Recoba made the result safe with the Nerazzurri's fourth in the 60th minute with a trademark left-footed shot from the edge of the Swiss box.

The Champions League group stage draw will take place at 16:00CET on Thursday afternoon.
