Inter v Portuguese teams

Inter have collected 1 victory, 4 draws and 3 defeats from 8 European away matches against Portuguese opposition. The only win was a 2-0 victory against Boavista in Porto on 3 December 1996. Youri Djorkaeff scored a 12th-minute penalty in the UEFA Cup last sixteen return leg, with Paul Ince adding the second on 66 minutes.

Sporting v Italian clubs

Sporting Lisbon have registered 3 wins, 5 draws and 3 defeats from their eleven European home matches against Italian sides.

Bento v Mancini

Sporting and Inter coaches Paulo Bento and Roberto Mancini meet in a competitive fixture for the first time.

Inter unbeaten with Hamer

Match referee Alain Hamer has refereed Inter on three previous occasions, and the Nerazzurri have never lost: Inter 1-1 Guingamp (1996/97 UEFA Cup last 32 second leg) Alaves 3-3 Inter (2000/01 UEFA Cup round of sixteen first leg) and Shakhtar Donetsk 0-2 Inter (2005/06 Champions League third qualifying round first leg). In ten matches officiated by the Luxembourg referee, Italian clubs have managed 6 wins, 2 draws (both Inter) and 2 defeats).

Eleven-match conceding streak

Inter's last clean sheet in away matches was the goalless draw at Livorno on 18 February 2006. The Nerazzurri have conceded goals in all eleven competitive (Serie A, Coppa Italia & Champions League) away matches played since that date, letting in a total of 15 goals.

Ninety-nine goals

Inter have conceded 99 goals in European Cup/Champions League matches. The first was Theo's penalty in a 3-1 loss at Monaco on 4 December 1963.

Fourth consecutive home defeat?

Sporting Lisbon haven't drawn a European home match since their goalless draw with Inter in Champions League qualifying on 14 August 2002. Since that date the Portuguese side have drawn 7 games and lost 6, including their last three.

One draw in 14 games

Sporting are without a European draw since 16 December 2004 when they held Newcastle 1-1 at St James' Park in the UEFA Cup group stage. They have since collected 7 victories and 6 draws from European cup competition matches.

LISBON - Caneira popped up with a second-half winner as Inter fell to a 1-0 defeat against Sporting Lisbon in Champions League Matchday 1 at the Estadio Alvalade. Bayern Munich put four past Spartak Moscow in tonight's other Group B match.

Roberto Mancini made four changes to the starting lineup that beat Fiorentina at the weekend, with Samuel and Grosso in for Materazzi and Zanetti at the back, Stankovic replacing the injured Cambiasso in midfield, and Adriano preferred to Crespo as partner for Ibrahimovic in attack.

Ibra tested Ricardo with a long-range effort in the opening minute. The Sporting keeper then kept out a Grosso curler and twice denied Adriano before the break. At the other end Romagnoli created openings for Nani and Caneira with well timed through balls but Francesco Toldo was quick to react.

Sporting came out for the second half with renewed determination, Nani, Romagnoli and Liedson firing off target from various angles before Caneira produced Sporting's winner out of nothing on 64 minutes. Chesting down a long ball upfield, the Sporting wing-back cut inside Maicon and volleyed in off the underside of the crossbar.

Mancini brought on Mariano Gonzalez for Luis Figo straight after the goal but the Nerazzurri suffered a further setback when Patrick Vieira was sent off for a second bookable offence.

More substitutions followed with Crespo and Zanetti replacing Adriano and Grosso.

Ten-man Inter reacted well to the double blow and almost grabbed a late equaliser when Ibrahimovic fired a low long-range drive just wide of the post.
