MILAN - Adriano scored his first goal since April as Inter defeated Reggina 1-0 on a rainsoaked pitch at the Stadio Granillo.

The slender victory moves Roberto Mancini's team five points clear of second-placed Roma ahead of Sunday's games.

With Tuesday's Champions League trip to Moscow in mind, Mancini rested the likes of Zanetti, Ibrahimovic and Samuel, and partnered Cruz with Adriano in attack.

Vieira made his return from injury while Toldo was preferred to Julio Cesar in goal.

Reggina made the Nerazzurri work hard for their points and launched an early assault on Toldo's goal.

Inter took the lead against the run of play on 18 minutes when Adriano got the slightest of touches to Luis Figo's inswinging left-wing free kick and glanced past Campagnolo.

Reggina produced a spirited reaction and Cozza fired narrowly wide after meeting a threaded pass from Cascione.

Ceravolo then wasted a gilt-edged chance, mis-kicking after dancing past Cordoba during a run into the box.

On 38 minutes Campagnolo spilled Adriano's stinging shot from a free kick but the Reggina keeper smothered the loose ball before it could cross the line.

Chivu blocked Cozza's shot from Hallfredsson's through ball as the Amaranto relentlessly searched for a leveller.

The pace dropped markedly in the second half as Inter defended their lead.

Mancini replaced Adriano with Zanetti, leaving Cruz as lone striker until the introduction of Ibrahimovic for Vieira.

The Inter coach made his final switch with 13 minutes remaining, substituting Cruz with Suazo.

The game came back to life in the closing stages, Ibrahimovic gliding past Cherubin and Barreto before testing Campagnolo with a thunderous strike.

Reggina almost snatched a late equaliser through Cozza who shot inches wide.

Ficcadenti's side went close again in added time when Cascione's diving header from Aronica's cross was well saved by Toldo.
