Fenerbahçe v Italian teams

The Istanbul club have played 11 competitive matches against teams from Italy. They have won 2 and lost 9. On home soil Fenerbahçe have entertained Italian teams on 6 occasions, winning 2 and drawing 4. Their 4 Champions League matches to date against Italian clubs have all ended in defeats.

In 6 competitive meetings against clubs from Turkey Inter have won 4, drawn 1 and lost 1. In away matches the Nerazzurri have managed a win, a draw and a defeat. Inter's last trip to Turkey was on 16 September 1987 - a 0-0 draw with Besiktas in the UEFA Cup first round.

Zico v Mancini

The two coaches have never met in a competitive match but there are three previous meetings between the Brazilian and the Italian when they were players. All three games (2 in Serie A, 1 in Coppa Italia) came in the 1984/85 season when Zico played for Udinese and Mancini for Sampdoria. They each won once in the league while the cup game ended in a stalemate.

Turks' last home defeat in Europe against AC Milan

Fenerbahçe have not lost a European match at home since 23 November 2005 when they were beaten 4-0 by AC Milan in the Champions League. Since that date the Turks have collected 4 wins and 3 draws.

Last Inter goal in Turkey back in September 1981

Alessandro Altobelli's 89th-minute goal in the 3-1 UEFA Cup win at Adanaspor on 16 September 1981 was Inter's last goal on Turkish soil. The Nerazzurri failed to score in their two successive trips to Turkey (Trabzonspor 1-0 Inter & Besiktas 0-0 Inter). Both matches were UEFA Cup fixtures.

Cruz, Crespo & UCL goals for Inter

Julio Cruz and Hernan Crespo have each scored 10 Champions League goals for Inter. They are fourth in the all-time list of Nerazzurri scorers in the competition, along with Obafemi Martins. The two Argentines are a goal away from the top three of Jair (11 goals), Adriano (16) and Sandro Mazzola (16).

The ref: Luis Medina Cantalejo

Spanish official Luis Medina Cantalejo, born in 1964, has been an international referee since 2002. In Matchday 1 he referees Inter for the third time after the 2-2 draw at Sochaux in the 2003/04 UEFA Cup and last season's 1-1 Champions League draw at Bayern Munich. Besides these two matches, Cantalejo has refereed 4 other European matches involving Italian teams (3 Italian wins and 1 draw). He has taken charge of one Fenerbahçe match - a 2-0 defeat to Schalke 04 in Gelsenkirchen in the 2005/06 Champions League.

ISTANBUL - Inter opened their 2007/08 Champions League campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Fenerbahçe at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium.

Spurred on by their frenzied fans, Zico's team outplayed the Nerazzurri after Ibrahimovic's early chance from 25 yards.

Deivid had a flicked header tipped over by Julio Cesar who kept out a Roberto Carlos effort before Nelson Rivas swept clear to deny Kezman a chance from close range.

Fenerbahçe's early domination continued as Deivid hit his 20-yard shot straight at the Inter keeper and Aurelio headed wide from an inviting position after connecting with an Alex cross.

Just when Inter looked to be getting into their stride Fenerbahçe took the lead on 43 minutes when Deivid found the net with an unstoppable shot on the turn from Alex's cut-back.

Roberto Carlos hit the post with a venomous strike and forced Julio Cesar into a difficult save with one of his trademark free kicks as the Turkish champions produced chance after chance to increase their lead after the break.

Marco Aurelio then wasted a gilt-edged chance from Alex's intelligent ball into the area.

The Fenerbahçe faithful must have thought they were 2-0 up in the 66th minute but Julio Cesar somehow pulled off a magnificent reflex save from Alex's close-range bullet header.

Mancini's reaction was to bring on Figo for Solari, replace Dacourt with Jimenez for the Chilean's competitive debut, and substitute Suazo with Hernan Crespo.

The game changed in Inter's favour but the Nerazzurri failed to capitalise on a period of pressure. Fenerbahçe hit back again and could have snatched two late goals through Lugano and Semih.

Inter's Matchday 2 opponents PSV Eindhoven beat CSKA Moscow 2-1 in tonight's other Group G match.
