Benitez v Schaaf

Wednesday's Champions League match is the first meeting between the two coaches.

Inter v Werder Bremen

Two clubs played each other at home and away in the 2004/05 and 2008/09 group stages of the Champions League. Neither side has the edge, with one win apiece and two 1-1 draws. Inter have scored in all four previous meetings, netting a total of 5 goals, and are unbeaten at home to the Germans, with a win and a draw.

Werder Bremen v Italian clubs

Werder face an Italian side for the 29th time after 10 wins, 11 draws and 7 defeats. Away to Italian teams, the Germans have notched 2 wins, 5 draws and 7 defeats from 14 outings, their last victory dating back to 22 November 1989: 3-2 at Napoli.

Inter v German teams

Inter have faced German opposition on 36 previous occasions, winning 19 games (including last season's Champions League final victory over Bayern Munich), drawing 8 and losing 9. In 18 home games against German sides, Inter have won 13, drawn 1 (including a 1-1 draw against Werder in the 2008/09 UCL group stage) and lost 4.

Inter unbeaten at home in 48 games

Inter have not lost a competitive match at home since 26 November 2008 when they were beaten 1-0 by Panathinaikos in the Champions League. Of their following 48 home games, the Nerazzurri have won 37 and drawn 11.

Nerazzurri chasing eleventh consecutive home win

Inter have won all of their last 10 home matches, scoring a total of 28 goals: Livorno (3-0 in Serie A), CSKA Moscow (1-0 in Champions League), Bologna and Juventus (3-0 and 2-0 respectively in Serie A), Barcelona (3-1 in Champions League), Atalanta and ChievoVerona (3-1 and 4-3 respectively in Serie A), Roma (3-1 in Italian Super Cup), Udinese and Bari (2-1 and 4-0 respectively). The last team to go unbeaten away to Inter was Genoa in Serie A on 7 March 2010 (0-0).

Bremen goalless in only one of last 17 Euro games

Bremen have failed to score in just one of their last 17 European matches: a 1-0 home defeat to Twente on 18 February 2010. The Germans have scored a total of 45 goals in the other 16 matches.

MILAN - Crisis? What crisis? European champions Inter bounced back from their weekend defeat at Roma with a scintillating display against Werder Bremen in Matchday 2 of the Champions League.

Samuel Eto'o scored his ninth, tenth and eleventh goals of the season and created one for Wesley Sneijder as the Nerazzurri made it a night to forget for Thomas Schaaf's team.

Rafa Benitez made two changes to the team that lost in Rome at the weekend, with youngsters Biabiany and Coutinho coming in for injured pair Milito and Pandev. He placed more faith in youth in the second half with Santon and Obi also making appearances.

The Inter bashers might have been scribbling their headlines in the opening minutes when Werder were presented with two gilt-edged chances.

Lucio made a last-gasp clearance after Almeida lobbed Julio Cesar, and the Portuguese forward went close again moments later, forcing a tipped save from our Brazilian keeper.

The Nerazzurri soon stepped into their stride and came back at their opponents with two good chances inside the tenth minute. Coutinho stole in at the back post and glanced wide his header from Biabiany's cross, before playing a peach of a through ball to Sneijder who saw his angled drive palmed round by Wiese.

Werder missed their third chance of the game on 20 minutes when Almeida got in behind Lucio and inexplicably hit wide his shot from Borowski's pin-point delivery.

From the following minute it was all Inter. Eto'o opened the floodgates, shooting through Wiese's legs after latching on to Cambiasso's through ball, and six minutes later arrowed past the Werder custodian to bring his tally for the season into double figures.

Not content with scoring goals, Eto'o then laid on Inter's third, an inch-perfect through ball to Sneijder who lifted elegantly over Wiese.

Stankovic could have made it four before the half-hour mark, his chipped shot bringing a tipped save from Wiese.

Reserve goalkeeper Luca Castellazzi came on for his competitive debut in black and blue at the start of the second half with Julio Cesar unable to continue after sustaining a left thigh strain.

Lucio followed his countryman into the tunnel after hobbling off with a similar injury. On came Santon at left-back with Chivu switching to central defence.

Obi replaced Stankovic in the final stages for his competitive debut and the Nigerian was on the pitch for less than a minute when Eto'o completed a memorable night for Inter with his third and Inter's fourth.

The in-form Cameroonian ace beat the offside trap and took Sneijder's pass round Wiese before darting on goal and slotting into an open net.

In tonight's other Group A clash Tottenham beat Twente 4-1 at home. Spurs will travel to Milan in Matchday 3 without Rafael Van der Vaart, who was sent off at White Hart Lane.
