Inter Milan are unbeaten across their previous four meetings with Shakhtar Donetsk in European competition, incl. qualifying games (W2 D2), while they’ve only conceded one goal across these four games, keeping three clean sheets.

Shakhtar Donetsk have only played away from home against Inter Milan on one previous occasion in European competition, with that coming in the second leg of a UEFA Champions League qualifying tie back in 2005-06 – that game finished 1-1, however Inter Milan progressed after winning the first leg 2-0 away from home.

This will be the third time Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk have faced each other in 2020, with the first of those meetings being a 5-0 win for Antonio Conte’s side in the semi-final of last season’s UEFA Europa League.

A draw or defeat will see Inter Milan bow out of the UEFA Champions League at the group stage for a third consecutive season – before this run, they had progressed from 11 of their 12 group stages (including second group stage) in the competition.

Shakhtar Donetsk could qualify for the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League for a fifth time, last doing so in 2017/18. Shakhtar’s goal difference after five games is -7 (GF5 GA12), with only two sides progressing with as poor a goal difference after five group stage games: Galatasary in 2013/14 and Atalanta in 2019/20 (both -7).

Inter Milan are winless in both home UEFA Champions League matches this season (D1 L1) – they have never failed to win a home match in the group stage in a single season before, winning at least once in 14 previous group stages in the competition.

Shakhtar’s Manor Solomon has scored in three of his five substitute appearances in the UEFA Champions League (60%) – among players to make at least five sub apps in the competition, only former  FC Kaiserslautern striker Jürgen Rische has scored in a higher percentage – Rische scored in four of his five sub games in 1998/99 (80%).

Inter Milan pair Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martínez have both been directly involved in three goals in two career appearances against Shakhtar Donetsk, with both of them scoring a brace and providing one assist in their 5-0 win in last season’s UEFA Europa League semi-final.

Manor Solomon has scored four UEFA Champions League goals for Shakhtar – the only Israeli player to score more in the history of the competition is Yossi Benayoun (7).

Romelu Lukaku has been directly involved in 17 goals in his 15 matches in the UEFA Europa League/Champions League for Inter (13 goals, 4 assists).

Lukaku has scored four goals in four Champions League appearances this season, as many as in his previous 14 matches in the competition.
