MILAN – On the day of Inter’s 106th birthday, and with president Erick Thohir in the stands, the Nerazzurri were able to celebrate with a victory, thanks to Rodrigo Palacio’s 30th-minute header.

For this clash against Torino, and with Juan Jesus suspended, Mazzarri chose a three-man defence of Rolando, Ranocchia and Campagnaro in front of Handanovic in goal. Jonathan and Nagatomo were tasked with working the flanks outside of Guarin, Cambiasso and Hernanes in midfield. Starting in attack were Palacio and Icardi.

After a quarter of an hour, and some balanced play, the first big chance fell to Torino but Immobile blasted his shot high. Inter looked to respond through Icardi and Palacio, and on 26 minutes Rodrigo got on the end of a fantastic ball from Guarin only to see Padelli reject his header. Then in the 30th minute Palacio had a second chance and didn’t disappoint, when his looping header got the best of the Granata keeper to sneak in at the far post. The Nerazzurri were now in the lead. After a minute of added time the teams went to the dressing rooms with the hosts leading 1-0.

Torino started the second half in lively fashion, but Inter held strong. Hernanes nearly provided Palacio with a brace. On 81 minutes it was the Brazilian who showed his class when he shot just wide after a mesmerising run through the box. Ventura’s side were looking more aggressive but after three minutes of injury time Mazzarri’s boys were the ones to claim the three points: 1-0 to Inter.
