Solidity, experience, tactical intelligence and an eye for goal. Stefan De Vrij has exemplified all these traits in the past five seasons for Inter and he will continue to do so. The Dutch defender has extended his contract until 2025. Following his debut, the Nerazzurri’s number 6 has been an absolute benchmark in Simone Inzaghi’s squad. Since joining Inter in the Summer of 2018, he has made 204 appearances, topped off with nine goals.
He was already a fundamental part of the Nerazzurro defence in his first season, whilst offering an impressive offensive threat as well. His first goal in the Nerazzurro shirt came in just his second game of the Serie A. He provided the assist for Vecino’s goal against Tottenham, on his Champions League debut and scored a vital goal in Inter’s victory in the Milan derby. By the end of the season, he had registered 36 appearances, with two goals to his name.
The following season saw another high level of performance from the Dutchman, repeating his success both defensively and offensively. His goal tally reached four by the end of the 2019/20 season, amongst them, a huge goal in the 4-2 derby victory. An extraordinary year, capped off with the deserved award of the best defender in the Serie A that season.
In the 2020/21 season, he was vital part of the team that won Inter's 19th Scudetto. A triumphant ride in which the Dutch defender demonstrated both reliability and a great tactical maturity. He made 42 appearances, complete with one goal.
In the last two seasons, 2021/22 and 2022/23, the Dutchman’s contributions have consistently been at a high level. 80 appearances and two goals. Numbers that proved decisive in the victories of two Coppa Italias and two Italian Supercups. Stefan's history in the Nerazzurro jersey speaks for itself, an exemplary professional who will continue to serve the Nerazzurri for the following seasons.
