And as his construction rose before our eyes, we were able to appreciate what he was creating. His 2019/20 Serie A Best Defender award, earned in just his second season with Inter, showed how quickly those foundations had been laid. There were highlights within the building process, too: De Vrij scored 13 goals for Inter, three of them coming in the Derby della Madonnina against AC Milan. The first arrived in the dramatic 3-2 victory on 17 March 2019, a crucial result in the race for Champions League qualification. The third came on 2 February 2025, when his stoppage-time equaliser rescued a 1-1 draw. But perhaps the most unforgettable was the one in between. On 9 February 2020, with Inter having been 2-0 down, Stefan rose highest to power home a regal header that completed an extraordinary comeback, turning the derby on its head as San Siro erupted in celebration.

From the following season onwards, De Vrij's wall began to fill with silverware. Every trophy bore his unmistakable signature: immaculate professionalism, unwavering commitment and the positional intelligence that made him the heartbeat of Inter's back three. His leadership earned him the captain's armband in both Serie A and the UEFA Champions League, while his consistency never faltered, even through difficult moments, defeats or injury setbacks. Stefan was always ready to put everything on the line: his foot; his head; his body; whatever it took to protect Inter’s box, because the wall he had promised to build had to remain dependable.

And he kept that promise. Eight years in Nerazzurri colours, which is to say eight seasons defined by loyalty, passion and success. Three Serie A titles. Three Coppa Italia trophies. Three Supercoppa Italianas. A remarkable journey comprising 296 appearances, 13 goals and eight assists. Match after match, brick after brick, the wall was completed. A cornerstone of Inter's recent history. A player whose very introduction inspired confidence: "Number 6... Stefan de Vrij!"
