Inter v Ukrainian teams

Inter face a Ukrainian side over two legs for the second time. The first was in the 2003/04 Champions League group phase when the Nerazzurri beat Dynamo Kiev 2-1 at home (Adani, Fedorov, Vieri) and drew 1-1 away (Adani, Diogo Rincon).

Shakhtar Donetsk v Italian clubs

In their four previous two-legged ties with Italian teams, Shakhtar Donetsk have never drawn, with 1 win and 7 defeats. Shakhtar represented the Soviet Union in the 1976/77 UEFA Cup when they lost to Juventus over two legs, and the Ukraine in the three two-legged meetings with Italian clubs since then (a Cup Winners' Cup in 1997/98 and two Champions League group phases).

Shakhtar Donetsk v Inter

Wednesday's Champions League qualifier in Ukraine is the first match between the two clubs.

Lucescu v Mancini

Mircea Lucescu and Roberto Mancini meet for the fifth time in competitive matches, and the current Inter boss has never lost to the Romanian coach with 3 wins and a draw. Mancini's sides have always won away to Lucescu's teams, scoring twice on both occasions.

The ref: Alain Hamer

Born in Luxembourg on 10 December 1965, Alain Hamer has been an international referee since 1993. In Wednesday's Champions League qualifier he officiates in an Inter match for the third time. Inter drew 1-1 at home to Guingamp in the 1996/97 UEFA Cup, and 3-3 away to Deportivo La Coruna in the same competition four seasons later. The Luxembourg referee has taken charge of 9 matches involving Italian sides (5 wins, 2 draws - both Inter, and 2 defeats).

Adriano nears Jair in all-time scorers' list

With 10 goals in Europe last season, Adriano is third in the all-time list of Inter scorers in the Champions League/European Cup. One more goal will see Adriano reach fellow countryman Jair on 11 goals, five behind Sandro Mazzola (16 goals). With 3 goals in Champions League qualifying rounds, Adriano is one away from Chiesa and Shevchenko's record of 4 goals in qualifying for an Italian club. Sensini, Crespo and Trezeguet are the other players to have scored 3 in Champions League qualifying rounds.

Inter set for 100th Champions League/European Cup match

Inter take part in the Champions League/European Cup for the 13th time in their history. The Nerazzurri were European champions in 1963/64 and 1964/65 with 3-1 and 1-0 victories over Real Madrid and Benfica, and in 1966/67 and 1971/72 lost to Celtic and Ajax in the final.
So far Inter have played 99 matches in Europe's top competition for clubs, collecting 49 wins, 30 draws and 20 defeats, scoring 150 goals and conceding 90.
Inter's top scorer in the Champions League/European Cup is Sandro Mazzola with 16 goals, while Adriano is Nerazzurri top scorer in one edition of the tournament with 10 goals last season. The Brazilian is also the only Inter player to have scored a hat-trick in the competition (Inter 3-1 Porto last 15 March).
Wednesday's match in Donetsk is therefore Inter's 100th in the Champions League/European Cup. The first was a 0-0 draw away to Everton on 18 September 1963, with the first victory a 1-0 win at home to the Toffees a week later. The first defeat was a 1-0 loss to Rangers in Glasgow on 3 March 1965. Inter's biggest win was a 6-0 victory over Dynamo Bucharest in Milan on 11 November 1964 and the biggest defeat was that 5-1 loss at home to Arsenal on 25 November 2003.

No Shakhtar home draw in UCL since 2002

Shakhtar Donetsk's last home draw in the Champions League was on 14 August 2002 when the Ukrainians drew 1-1 with Bruges in the qualifying round. Since then Shakhtar have collected 6 wins and a defeat (1-0 to AC Milan last season) in Champions League home matches.

DONETSK - Inter take a two-goal advantage over Shakhtar into the Champions League third qualifying round return leg behind closed doors thanks to efforts from Martins and Adriano at a packed Olympic Stadium in Donetsk on Wednesday.

The Nerazzurri strike partners stunned Shakhtar with two splendid second-half goals that see Mancini's men with a foot in the Champions League group stage draw.

Shakhtar started strongly and had a good chance on five minutes when Brazilian striker Brandao outjumped Javier Zanetti to head wide Matuzalem's cross.

Inter had two penalty claims turned down as both Martins and Stankovic were fouled in the Donetsk box, then went close to taking the lead four minutes before the break when Materazzi's header from Veron's corner came back off the crossbar.

Playing their 100th Champions League/European Cup match, the Nerazzurri upped their game after the restart and took the upper hand on 67 minutes when Obafemi Martins sprinted past Barcauan to meet Adriano's exquisite backheeled pass and slot under Lastuvka.

Eleven minutes after Martins' opener Adriano equalled compatriot Jair's tally of eleven goals in Europe's most prestigious cup competition, rising above Srna to head home Ze Maria's pin-point outswinger from the right flank.

Adriano provided Esteban Cambiasso with a golden opportunity to make it 3-0 five minutes from time but the Argentine sent his first-time shot wide.
