The players who have chosen to wear the number 17 for the Nerazzurri since 1995

MILAN – From the 1995/96 season onwards, teams abandoned the classic 1 to 11 numbering and opened up to personalised shirts: a number for each player, with their surname on.

Today, on Friday 17th, let’s go through the history of Nerazzurri number 17s.

SALVATORE FRESI, 1995/1996 season

The first to wear the Nerazzurri no.17 since ’95 was Salvatore Fresi, who also wore the numbers 7 and 11 during his career at Inter. In the ’98 UEFA Cup final, Fresi took to the pitch with the number 7 on his back, because Francesco Moriero wore no.17 that season.

Fresi made 123 appearances for Inter between 1995 and 2000, scoring one league goal and winning the ’98 UEFA Cup.

FRANCESCO MORIERO, 1997/98 and 1998/99 seasons

Francesco Moriero spent three seasons at Inter, and during the first two of those he wore the number 17 shirt. A devastating right winger whose skills and imagination down the flank led to multiple goals and assists as well as the 1998 UEFA Cup. In his third season with the Nerazzurri, in 1999/2000, he wore the no.7 shirt. Overall, Moriero made 83 appearances, scoring ten goals, including the one in The Derby on 8 November 1998 that ended 1-1.

CYIRIL DOMORAUD, 1999/2000 season

The Ivorian defender, bought from Marseille in the summer of ’99, made ten appearances for Inter whilst wearing the number 17 shirt.

MICHELE SERENA, 2001/2002 season

Michele Serena arrived at Inter in January 2000 and he first wore the number 6 for the remainder of that season as well as the following one. Then, in the 2001/02 season, he wore the number 17 shirt, but only made two appearances (against Roma and Fiorentina) due to a thigh injury. Overall, he played in 34 games for the Nerazzurri.

FABIO CANNAVARO, 2003-2004

FILIPPO MANCINI, 2007/08 season

Filippo Mancini, Roberto’s son, only made one appearance for the Nerazzurri, in which he wore the no.17 shirt. This was on 17 January 2008 in the Coppa Italia round of 16 second leg when Inter beat Reggina 3-0 thanks to goals from Cesar, Crespo and a Cascione own goal. Mancini came on in the 83rd minute to replace Hernan Crespo.

ANGELO PALOMBO, 2011/2012 season

Having arrived from Sampdoria in January 2012, Angelo Palombo only played three league games for Inter, in which he wore the number 17 shirt.

McDONALD MARIGA, 2009/2010, 2010/2011 and 2012/2013 seasons

The first Kenyan player in Inter’s history arrived at the Club in the 2009/10 January transfer window before making his contribution towards winning the Treble in the second half of that season. His important contributions included the goal at Atalanta in the league, and his cameo against Barcelona at the Camp Nou in the Champions League semi-final. He always wore the number 17 shirt, even in the following seasons. Overall he made 36 appearances, scored two goals and won the Scudetto, the Champions League, two Coppa Italia, an Italian Supper Cup and a Club World Cup.

ZDRAVKO KUZMANOVIC, from 2012/2013 to the 2014/2015 season

The Serbian midfielder born in 1987 spent two and a half seasons at Inter, making 55 appearances and scoring one goal, all whilst wearing the number 17 Nerazzurri shirt.

GARY MEDEL, from 2014/2015 to the 2016/2017 season

YANN KARAMOH, 2017/2018 season

This young man, born in the Ivory Coast but with a French passport, has made 18 appearances for Inter so far. In 2017/18 he took to the pitch 17 times in the league and Coppa Italia whilst wearing the no.17 shirt, and he scored a great goal at San Siro with a left-footed strike against Bologna. He only made one appearance the following season, against Sassuolo wearing the number 7, before being loaned out.
