A first defeat for Madonna’s U19s despite their late heavy pressure

DORTMUND - A luckless away trip in the UEFA Youth League for Armando Madonna’s U19 Inter team, who picked up their first defeat in the competition this season as Knauff’s brace proved decisive at the Dortmund Brackel Training Ground. Vergani scored for the Nerazzurri, but it was the hosts who walked away the winners. 2-1 was the final score in the favour of the Germans despite Inter piling on the pressure late on. Inter remain top of Group F on nine points, with Dortmund on six alongside Slavia Prague and Barcelona bottom with three.

The match started with Dortmund looking to control the tempo of the game. The team in yellow dominated the possession while the Nerazzurri looked to defend solidly and hit their opponents on the break. Gianelli went for goal in the 19th minute but Unbehaun easily parried his shot. Stankovic was then forced into a save around the half hour mark. In the final moments of the half Vergani found himself unmarked in front of goal but shot well over the bar.

It was Borussia Dortmund who started the second half the stronger team. Stankovic was called into action twice to deny Raschl and Moukoko before he was beaten by Knauff, who directed a corner from the left off his chest and into the back of the net. The goal woke Inter up who began to play with more freedom and they were rewarded for that in the 61st minute. Vergani profited off an error by the Dortmund defence and through great individual play brought his side level. But just as the Nerazzurri were starting to get into their stride the hosts retook the lead and once again Knauff was the scorer: He connected with Khadra’s corner and bagged his second of the match. Vergani tried to get a brace of his own in the 75th minute but Unbehaun was ultimately untroubled.

As the end of the match drew near, Inter had a flurry of chances and came close to equalising on multiple occasions. The last of these came in the 93rd minute as Unbehaun produced an excellent save to keep out Bonfanti’s powerful shot.
