THE MATCH

A dream night with a great battle on the pitch. It was a huge clash regarding the league standing between Inter and Roma in what was a feisty game: at the final whistle, Graziano Cesari’s notebook had seven yellows and two reds. It was a proper fight all over the pitch. Inter lined up with Cuper’s 4-4-2, Michele Serena was on the left flank and had a great performance a few days before the muscle injury in Florence that was to end his season. The defence was completed by Zanetti, Cordoba and Materazzi ahead of Toldo in goal. The midfield was made up of the Italian axis of Di Biagio and Cristiano Zanetti with the wizadry of Dalmat and Seedorf on the wings. Up top, Vieri and Recoba sprinkled class on the evening, with Ronie still injured.

Chino’s scintillating goal came after less than two minutes: he dribbled round Antonioli and slotted home. Vieri’s second is one of his finest goals for the Nerazzurri: Recoba’s cross came in from the right, and Bobo managed to head home despite being tightly marked by Walter Samuel. He darted in then spun away and, despite his shirt being pulled, he managed to stoop and head the ball into the bottom corner. It was a masterpiece that made it 2-0 and sparked unbridled joy. In the second half, Totti’s goal reignited the contest but Recoba’s masterful free kick halted any comeback: it was a left-footed curler that flew into the top corner to make sure the game finished 3-1.
