Inter 5-1 Parma is the fourth instalment of Inter Classics on YouTube: we started with the 2006 Coppa Italia final against Roma, then we followed with Inter 3-2 Sampdoria before the very enjoyable showing of AC Milan 0-4 Inter from 2009/10 last week.

Today, we go back to matchday three of the 1999/2000 season. On that day, unfortunately two iconic legends in the history of football were in San Siro’s stands due to injury: Roberto Baggio and Ronaldo. However, there was no lack of quality nor imagination on the pitch and Inter hit a purple patch that day, despite the best efforts of a young Buffon in the Parma goal.

The Nerazzurri were possessed, starting quickly with Zamorano’s goal assisted by Vieri. Crespo’s goal momentarily brought Parma level, but not for long. Di Biagio was everywhere, and in the 17th minute Christian Vieri scored one of his greatest and most extraordinary goals in his time at Inter: Paulo Sousa played one into him on the edge of the box, Vieri bamboozled Thuram with a back heel flick before curling one into the top corner. It was an eternal masterpiece that he celebrated with a run and slide that ended flat on the ground outstretched like a star, much like Platini’s famous gesture when his goal was ruled out in the Intercontinental Cup in ’85.

Inter were on fire that day, with Moriero making it three before half-time, and it could’ve been more had the woodwork not intervened. The second half of that rain-soaked game was also impressive, with Zamorano’s second making it 4-1 after the inspired Vieri’s assist before Thuram’s own goal made it five.
