From Sarti to Julio Cesar, from Pagliuca to Bordon: who should join Zenga and Toldo?

MILAN - Voting is well and truly open for the third edition of our Inter Hall of Fame. This year is a special one, which also includes Nerazzurri players who won the Triplete and have since retired (check out all of the info on criteria and how to vote here). As always, Inter fans are invited to select four legends, one for each position: goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and attacker.

The winners from the last two seasons:

- 2018 edition: Walter Zenga; Javier Zanetti; Lothar Matthäus; Ronaldo; - 2019 edition: Francesco Toldo; Giacinto Facchetti; Dejan Stankovic; Giuseppe Meazza.

Today we’re focusing on the goalkeepers who could be entering the Nerazzurri Hall of Fame: which of these ten will be joining Zenga and Toldo? Remember that in order to be eligible, the players need to have made at least 60 appearances and won at least one trophy for Inter.

The nominated goalkeepers span the entirety of Inter’s history: all the way from our first Scudetto to our 18th, our No.1s (or No.12s in Julio Cesar’s case) have led the way along a lengthy and successful path. Here they are in all their glory:

IVANO BORDON (13 April 1951) An extremely strong bond with Inter, one that began in our youth teams before Bordon’s first appearances at 19 in two games full of fire: a #DerbyMilano and the second half of the infamous “Game of the Can” in Mönchengladbach. Bordon protected the Inter posts between 1970 and ’83, making 382 appearances, setting the Nerazzurri record for the most time without conceding a goal (686 minutes between the fourth and eleventh matchday of the 1979/80 season) and winning two Scudetti (’71 and ’80) and two Coppe Italia (’78 and ’82).

LORENZO BUFFON (19 December 1929) From a famous rival, winner of four league titles with AC Milan, to the valiant protector of the Nerazzurri net at the start of the ‘60s. With 89 appearances and spectacular style, he won the 1962/63 Scudetto in an Inter shirt.

ANGELO CAIMO (14 July 1914 - 10 May 1998) At Ambrosiana Inter from the 1939/40 season to ‘42/43, he made 63 appearances and won the Scudetto in 1940.

PIERO CAMPELLI (20 December 1893 – 20 October 1946) The goalkeeper of the first Scudetto in Inter’s history: he played in Nerazzurri colours from 1909 to 1925, making 179 appearances. That wasn’t all though, as he collected another league title in 1920.

JULIO CESAR (3 September 1979) The Nerazzurri dream catcher from 2005 to 2012. He arrived from Brazil without making too much of a fuss, but gradually won his place in the starting line-up with the number 12 on his back. 300 appearances, historic saves (like that one on Messi) and all the trophies he could possibly win: five Scudetti, four Italian Super Cups, three Coppe Italia, one Champions League and one Club World Cup.

VALENTINO DEGANI (14 February 1905 - 8 November 1974) Incredibly agile, Degani made 176 appearances between 1924 and 1938 for Ambrosiana Inter. His time between the sticks saw him win the 1929/30 Scudetto.

GIORGIO GHEZZI (10 July 1930 - 12 December 1990) A Nerazzurri “kamikaze”: notoriously fearless with his charges off his line and a big personality. At Inter from ’51 to ‘58, he won back-to-back Scudetti in 1953 and 1954. An icon of the Nerazzurri side, he became a great entrepreneur after his footballing career came to a close.

GIANLUCA PAGLIUCA (18 December 1966) Filling Walter Zenga’s shoes would be a difficult task for anyone. Not for Pagliuca: a formidable goalkeeper who played five stunning seasons at the Club with some unforgettable saves along the way. 234 appearances and a UEFA Cup in 1998.

GIULIANO SARTI (2 October 1933 - 5 June 2017) The man behind the Grande Inter side. Not just a surname; he was viewed by everyone as an ice-cold goalkeeper. Few frills, plenty of substance: solid in all of the fundamentals, as well as in closing down onrushing attackers. He was then an innovator, making the team more compact on the pitch. 198 appearances and all the triumphs of the Grande Inter: two Scudetti (1965 and 1966), two European Cups (1964 and 1965) and two Intercontinental Cups. Decisive in the most important of finals, he is certainly forgiven for the mistake in Mantova.

LIDO VIERI (16 July 1939) 199 appearances from '69 to '76. He won the 1970/71 Scudetto, setting a record for the most time without conceding (685 minutes) which Bordon would go on to beat.
