A regretful Inter forced to settle for a 3 - 3 draw with Sassuolo

The Nerazzurri take the lead twice but are pegged back by Magnani's late goal

MILAN - Antonio Conte has discussed margins of error a lot in recent interviews and no more so during the latter stages of the season, one that is made up of many challenges and quick-fire matches. This was demonstrated this evening, when Inter failed to maintain the level of focus needed to secure all three points against Sassuolo. It was a strange encounter packed with goals and mistakes and one that ultimately ended 3-3 after an 89th-minute equaliser from Magnani (head over to the match gallery here).

A sluggish start was followed by a successful turnaround before two late goals led to feelings of both ecstasy and heartbreak for the hosts, who ended the game with ten men after Skriniar’s red card. Inter vs. Sassuolo is certainly never a drab affair.

The match kicked off with an early goal in the third minute from Caputo, who did well to slip through the Nerazzurri defence after a ball from Djuricic. The Nerazzurri, lining up with five new faces following the win over Sampdoria, struggled to get to grips with the game for the opening 30 minutes, with De Zerbi’s fast side often threatening on the break.

However, while Inter struggled getting forward, Moses and Biraghi were persistent down the flanks. This pressure soon led to our 41st-minute equaliser as Lukaku scored from the penalty spot after a foul on Skriniar. This was the Belgian’s 25th goal of the season. It was then just before the interval that Inter took the lead for the first time: bright-spark Biraghi fired home his first Serie A goal for Inter following smart link-up play with Sanchez.

Having taken a lead into the break, an advantage that was almost a surprise given the difficult opening 40 minutes, Inter were more cautious following the restart and looked less susceptible to the Neroverdi’s forays forward. The changes made brought a new lease of life to the two teams. And in the 64th minute, Gagliardini had an incredible chance to make it 3-1: just a couple of yards out and with an empty net in front of him, he smashed the ball against the woodwork, keeping Sassuolo in it.

Sassuolo’s pressure in the closing stages paid off: Young brought down Muldur in the box and Berardi, who has constantly been a thorn in Inter’s side, stepped up to score past Handanovic. It was just the beginning of a frantic ending. Inter thought they’d restored their lead through Lukaku, but the Belgian striker was standing in an offside position. However, Nerazzurri delight did follow shortly afterwards as Borja Valero finished off Candreva’s wonderful free-kick delivery to make it 3-2. It seemed like Inter were on their way to victory, but Sassuolo poured forward and manage to level the match through Magnani after Candreva had been thwarted by an outrushing Consigli just seconds before.

A difficult evening was compounded as Skriniar was sent off for a second bookable offence. The Slovakian defender will thus miss the team’s trip to Parma. This also applies to Antonio Conte, who will serve a suspension after also being cautioned by the referee during the match.

Three goals, one point, lots of regret. A match that needed to be put to bed but which slipped from the Nerazzurri’s grasp. But Inter need to get back up quickly, because they’ll be back on the pitch on Sunday.
