The Nerazzuri's numbers in Serie A: best defence, second-best attack with 18 different goalscorers: all of the facts and figures


MILANO – With a win against Atalanta, Inter ended the season on 82 points. They team has been solid this season and Conte’s side has largely been able to impose its own style of football on games, attentively and capably. In this Serie A season, the Nerazzurri excelled in various categories; in collaboration with Opta, we’ll guide you through all you need to know about Inter’s campaign.

81 GOALS SCORED WITH 18 DIFFERENT GOALSCORERS

With 81 goals scored, Inter ended the season as Serie A’s second best offence. The facts and figures don’t stop there though. The Nerazzurri scored the most headed goals in the league (20, 25% of the total) and conceded the least from headers (2). A particularly illuminating stat is that relating to the number of different goalscorers: 18 players hit the back of the net for Inter in the league (19 in all competitions). Inter don’t just dominate Italy in this regard either, they’re second only to Real Madrid (21 goalscorers) among Europe’s Top-5 leagues in this particular ranking.

THE FASTEST GOAL AND THE MOST DANGEROUS FORMATION EARLY ON

On the topic of goals, the Nerazzurri also left their mark in terms of the speed of hitting the back of the net. Inter’s Danilo D’Ambrosio scored thefastest goal of the season; he found the back of the net after just 50 seconds against Atalanta. Lautaro Martinez also finds himself on the podium in this regard for his after 1:04 minutes against Sassuolo. Handanovic and his teammates also made their mark in terms of their style of play; the ended the Serie A season as the team with the most goals in the first 15 minutes of matches (10).

BEST DEFENCE

Moving on from the offence, the Nerazzurri also had a brilliant season at the back. With only 36 goals conceded, Inter were the best out-and-out defensive side in the competition. This is further supported by the 14 clean sheets (4 consecutively at the end of the season) kept by the team. Stefan de Vrij, who was named in Opta’s Team of the Season, was the only defender in the 2019/20 season in the Italian top flight to bag at least three goals and three assists (4 and 3 respectively).

AWAY RECORD

Goals, solid at the back and an ability to dominate games even away from home. Inter had the best away record of the season, winning 13 games and taking 43 points. They only drew four times and lost twice in matches away from San Siro: 41 goals scored and 19 conceded.

GOALS, ASSISTS AND POSITIVE TEAM PLAY

Inter put up some seriously impressive numbers in the campaign just finished: their desire to play good football and the concentration they displayed on the pitch helped immensely. They always looked to play on the front foot and 203 shots on target, also coming in third in terms of their accuracy percentage (13.1%, behind Atalanta and Lazio). They completed 16211 passes with an accuracy of 85.1% and scored 26 goals from dead-ball situations (32% of the total goals scored).

Lukaku finished the season as the league’s third-highest goalscorer on 23 (essential to win 19 points). The Belgian scored the most goals away from home (15) in his debut season in the top flight of Italian football of any player in Serie A history.

Lautaro Martinez scored a total of 14 goals, and the Argentine also finished third in terms of shots on target (125, with an accuracy of 51%). Sanchez bagged the most assists at the Club (8), followed by Candreva (7).

Marcelo Brozovic was ranked fourth in this season’s passing stats (2080 completed with an accuracy of 89.9%). Milan Skriniar also ranked highly in this regard (1998 passes completed with an accuracy of 92.1%).
