NYON - After the win against Rennes, Armando Madonna’s side end their UEFA Youth League journey, losing to Real Madrid in the quarter-finals. The Nerazzurri were well in the game until Vezzoni saw red, changing the balance of the game after half an hour. Pozzer denied Chust from the spot, but Real kept coming and scored three goals in the last quarter of the game.
Los Blancos had the first effort on goal, but Pozzer got down quickly to make an easy save. In the thirteenth minute, Morante’s effort was blocked over the bar by the Inter ‘keeper. Real almost scored an own goal; Lopez directed it just wide of his own net (26’). The Nerazzurri grew into the game as the half wore on and threatened Real out wide. In injury time, Inter looked nervous as Morante went close to scoring.
After the break, Real looked the more likely of the two sides to score, with Arribas going close. Kinkoue responded in the 52nd minute, firing from his preferred position on the right but it was just wide, the Real goalkeeper wouldn’t have got there. The turning point came in the 56th minute: penalty to Real and Vezzoni sent off for a second bookable offence. The referee had played advantage for the foul, but came back to show Vezzoni yellow, and then red. However, Pozzer stared Chust down and the Real man’s penalty was saved.
Raul’s side kept pushing, using their numerical advantage and minutes later, Inter could nothing to stop Park putting Real in front. In the 75th minute, Real were awarded another penalty and this time they would not miss; Miguel Gutierrez stepped up and stroked home - 2-0 Real. Seven minutes from full time, Morante scored the goal that effectively ended the game as a contest and sent Real Madrid to the semi-finals.
