MILAN – Inter kicked off 2022 in style with the club’s eighth consecutive Serie A victory, thanks to a 2-1 success over Lazio in which the unlikely defensive duo of Alessandro Bastoni and Milan Skriniar came up with the goods in front of goal.
Ivan Perisic had a chance early on before Lautaro Martinez thought he had slotted the hosts into the lead, only for VAR to rule the goal out due to a marginal offside decision. Inter did take advantage with 30 minutes on the clock when Bastoni took aim from long range to score his first goal at San Siro and third for the club.
Just five minutes later, Lazio were on level terms when Ciro Immobile got on the end of a long ball by Danilo Cataldi ahead of Samir Handanovic.
Inter ramped up the pressure in the second half in a bid to return to the Serie A summit. Denzel Dumfries and Ivan Perisic went close to restoring the lead, but Skriniar made no mistake when he headed home Bastoni’s pinpoint cross from the left flank, sending the Nerazzurri back to the top of the table with a game in hand.
