Chivu: "Bittersweet feeling, we're bringing too little home"

— Nov 26th 2025The thoughts of the Inter coach after the Champions League defeat to Atletico de Madrid
At the Estadio Metropolitano, Inter suffered a 2-1 defeat against Atlético Madrid on Matchday 5 of the Champions League league phase. Julian Alvarez opened the scoring in the 9th minute, with the goal confirmed after a lengthy VAR check. In the second half, the Nerazzurri came back into it and found the equalizer through Zielinski. However, heartbreak struck in the 93rd minute, as Gimenez headed home from a corner to seal the win for the hosts. After the match, coach Cristian Chivu commented:
“Obviously this Inter is not lucky. I smoked three cigarettes, one after another. I spoke with the team and I said what needed to be said, because there's a bittersweet feeling: for the performance, the requirements of the match and how we played on the pitch. We didn't deserve to lose, but ultimately - deserved or undeserved - we bring nothing home with us. I saw a lot of bitterness in the eyes of the players, because we deserved more this evening. Unfortunately, football is like this: we need to pick ourselves back up and react. Losing like this really hurts. In life, like in football, the tables turn sooner or later. That bit of luck that we need to win will return. We have to manage certain moments better: we were a bit all over the place in the last ten minutes, we could've dealt with the counter-attacks and final pass better. These are things that we'll analyse and show the players. For Gimenez's goal, we had our tallest players in the box: Thuram, Pio Esposito, Akanji, Bastoni and Carlos, all of the best when it comes to heading the ball. Unfortunately, it happens. The real error was conceding the corner: we could've countered, but we lost the ball and then everything came from there. I repeat: we're disappointed and there's a bittersweet feeling, because we put in a good performance. Zieliński had a slight thigh problem: he told me he had five minutes left. I decided to take Bonny off because we needed fresh legs. We needed Marcus and Pio: one to hold the ball and push the team up, the other to give us depth with his speed and create chances on the counter-attack which we could've and should've done better on. ”
