France through to face Morocco in the quarter-finals; Argentina and Switzerland prepare for their Round of 16 ties


Seven Inter players are representing their countries at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The tournament, being held across the United States, Mexico and Canada, got underway on 11 June and will conclude on 19 July. The Nerazzurri players involved are: Lautaro Martínez (Argentina), Ange-Yoan Bonny (Côte d'Ivoire), Petar Sucic (Croatia), Marcus Thuram (France), Manuel Akanji (Switzerland), Hakan Calhanoglu (Türkiye) and Denzel Dumfries (Netherlands).

ARGENTINA - GROUP J

Argentina 3-0 Algeria Argentina 2-0 Austria Jordan 1-3 Argentina Round of 32: Argentina 3-2 Cape Verde (AET)

A perfect group stage for Argentina, who finished Group J with three wins from three and secured qualification for the Round of 32, where Lionel Scaloni's side will face Cape Verde. Lionel Messi led the way for La Albiceleste with six goals in three matches, while Lautaro Martinez started all three games. The Nerazzurri captain scored his first World Cup goal in the 3-1 win over Jordan. After beating Cape Verde 3-2 in extra time, Argentina will take on Egypt in the round of 16; the match will take place at 18:00 CEST at the Mercedez-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Tuesday 7 July.

CÔTE D'IVOIRE - GROUP E

Côte d'Ivoire 1-0 Ecuador Germany 2-1 Côte d'Ivoire Curaçao 0-2 Côte d'Ivoire Round of 32: Côte d'Ivoire 1-2 Norway

Côte d'Ivoire's run comes to an end in the Round of 32 after an unforgettable group stage as they secured the nation's first-ever qualification for the FIFA World Cup knockout stage. The Elephants finished second in Group E with six points. However, they were knocked out by Norway, with Erling Haaland scoring the decisive goal in the 85th minute. Bonny featured in all four matches, playing a total of 236 minutes.

CROATIA - GROUP L

England 4-2 Croatia Panama 0-1 Croatia Croatia 2-1 Ghana Round of 32: Portugal 2-1 Croatia

Petar Sucic's World Cup campaign with Croatia ended in the Round of 32 with a 2-1 defeat to Portugal: a thrilling and action-packed match, ultimately decided by a 94th-minute header from Gonçalo Ramos. The Nerazzurri midfielder appeared in all four matches, playing a total of 288 minutes. In the group stage, Petar provided an assist in the defeat to England and scored his first World Cup goal in the win over Ghana.

FRANCE - GROUP I

France 3-1 Senegal France 3-0 Iraq Norway 1-4 France Round of 32: France 3-0 Sweden Round of 16: Paraguay 0-1 France

After dominating Group I, finishing in first place with three wins and a remarkable ten goals, France continued their march forward with a resounding 3-0 victory over Sweden in the Round of 32. In the Round of 16, Les Bleus played and won a hard-fought match against Paraguay, who had previously knocked out Germany. Once again, the decisive man was Kylian Mbappé, who scored the only goal of the game with a perfect penalty. The Real Madrid forward continues to lead the tournament scoring charts with seven goals, level with Lionel Messi. Marcus Thuram, struggling with an injury, played in the group stage match against Iraq. Les Bleus will now face Morocco in the quarter-finals on Thursday 9 July at the Boston Stadium in Foxborough, with kick-off at 22:00 CEST (16:00 local time in Massachusetts).

SWITZERLAND - GROUP B

Qatar 1-1 Switzerland Switzerland 4-1 Bosnia and Herzegovina Switzerland 2-1 Canada Round of 32: Switzerland 2-0 Algeria

Switzerland secured a place in the Round of 16 with a 2-0 win against Algeria, having finished top of Group B with seven points. After a draw in their opening match against Qatar, the Swiss side recorded a 4-1 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina and a 2-1 win against Canada. Manuel Akanji has played every minute of the competition so far. In the Round of 16, scheduled for Tuesday 7 July at 22:00 CEST in Vancouver, Switzerland will face Colombia.

STANDINGS: Canada 7, Switzerland 4, Bosnia and Herzegovina 4, Qatar 1

TÜRKIYE - GROUP D

Australia 2-0 Türkiye Türkiye 0-1 Paraguay Türkiye 3-2 United States Türkiye and Calhanoglu bowed out of the World Cup after suffering two defeats in their opening two matches. Vincenzo Montella's side were left to rue missed chances in both games, with Hakan Calhanoglu starting each match and playing the full 90 minutes on both occasions. The 2-0 defeat to Australia was followed by a 1-0 loss to Paraguay, for whom Matias Galarza scored the winner in the second minute. Their victory over the USMNT came too late to make a difference.

STANDINGS: United States 6, Australia 4, Paraguay 4, Türkiye 3.

NETHERLANDS - GROUP F

Netherlands 2-2 Japan Netherlands 5-1 Sweden Tunisia 1-3 Netherlands Round of 32: Netherlands 1-1 Morocco a.e.t. (2-3 on penalties)

After finishing first in their group (following a draw with Japan and victories over Sweden and Tunisia), the Netherlands were eliminated in the Round of 32 by Morocco on penalties. Denzel Dumfries played every minute of the World Cup: all 90 minutes in the three group matches and 120 minutes in the match against Morocco.

STANDINGS: Netherlands 7, Japan 5, Sweden 4, Tunisia 0.
