Christian Vieri
Goals define the story of Christian Vieri with Inter Milan. So many of them — beautiful, relentless, unforgettable. Right from the start, all the way to the end. The anticipation at San Siro for the striker on the afternoon of August 29, 1999, was enormous. It blended with a dream that ultimately remained almost unrealized: seeing the Ronaldo-Vieri partnership leading Inter’s attack. Inter vs. Verona marked his debut and a hat-trick, as well as the first minutes shared on the pitch by the two forwards.
It seemed like a story already written. Christian, born in Bologna on July 12, 1973, moved to Australia following his father, a professional footballer. After playing and dreaming about cricket, he set his mind on one thing only: becoming a footballer. It was the path he wanted to pursue at all costs, enduring distance from his family, hardships, and sacrifices. Throughout his career, wearing many different shirts, Vieri nurtured his love for football by scoring goals.
And he scored many with the Inter shirt. Six seasons, 190 appearances, 123 goals. The club’s ninth all-time top scorer, with an average of 0.65 goals per game. He netted 103 goals in Serie A, 8 in the Coppa Italia, 6 in the Champions League, and 5 in the UEFA Cup. He never scored fewer than 17 goals in a season, with 2002–03 being his best campaign: 27 goals in 37 appearances, along with the Serie A top scorer title.
Special numbers achieved during seasons filled with triumphs as well as suffering. Only 667 minutes played alongside Ronaldo Nazário (with the pair scoring 18 goals together in the 11 matches they shared the attack) and just one trophy, the 2004–05 Coppa Italia. In that edition, Vieri scored three goals, two of them in the semifinal.
In the memory of the fans remains an endless collection of goals: from the first ones against Verona to the derby strike in 2001–02; from the battles against Valencia, with Vieri scoring both home and away in the Champions League quarterfinals, to his thunderous finishes against Reggina and Juventus. And then there were the celebrations — joyful, free, unrestrained: the shirt ripped off, pure happiness, the determination that inspired the comeback against Sampdoria, the crown placed on his head after reaching 100 goals in nerazzurro.
Now comes his induction into the Inter Hall of Fame, continuing and honoring the tradition of Inter’s legendary goal scorers.
