Inter were 3-0 up at halftime before Sampdoria hit four goals in the second half to send the tie into extra time (following the Nerazzurre's 3-2 win in the first leg). It then went all the way to penalties; Piazza made two saves and Mihashi scored the winning spot kick to send the Nerazzurre into the semis.
