Argentina win World Cup qualifier and leapfrog their rivals thanks to Leo Messi's penalty

MILAN - Ever Banega and Gary Medel were on opposite sides last night as they did battle in a crunch World Cup qualifier between Argentina and Chile.

Medel played the full 90 minutes at the heart of the Chilean backline while Banega came on as a substitute for Sergio Aguero in the 59th minute.

Argentina won the encounter thanks to Leo Messi's first-half penalty.

The result sees Argentina move above Chile in the South American table and into one of the four berths that provide automatic qualification to Russia 2018.
