#TBT, 40 years since Mazzola's final goal for Inter

MILAN – In this week's Throwback Thursday, we're going back 40 years to 22 June 1977.

On that day, in the 66th minute of a Coppa Italia tie with Lecce, Sandro Mazzola scored his last goal for Inter. The game finished 1-1.

It was Mazzola's 158th strike in the Nerazzurri shirt, which he wore no less that 565 times across a 16-year spell between 1961 and 1977.

During that time, he won four league titles (1962/63, 1964/65, 1965/66, 1970/71), two European Cups (1963/64, 1964/65) and two Intercontinental Cups (1964/65, 1965/66).

Son of the legendary Grande Torino captain Valentino Mazzola, Sandro also won the 1968 Euros and came second at the 1970 World Cup with Italy. He earned 70 caps for the Azzurri in total, scoring 22 goals.

In 1971 he was voted second in the Ballon d'Or behind Johan Cruyff and in 2005 his goal against Vasas Budapest (8 December 1966) was named by UEFA as the best goal in 50 years of the European Cup/Champions League.

After hanging up his boots, Mazzola worked as a club official from 1977 to 1984 and again from 1995 to 1999.
