Inter Campus returns to Asuncion to visit the coaches and children from the disadvantaged Cateura area the Aldeas Infantiles SOS orphanage

ASUNCION - Josè is a 9-year-old and he arrives at the pitch along with his father, who is taking a break from work to watch him play under instruction from the Inter Campus coaches from Milan. Josè’s father, like many other parents of the children involved in our project in Paraguay, works as ganchero in the Cateura landfill. He picks up and sorts waste to sell it. The gancheros live with their families in shacks all around the dump. It’s exactly in that area that Inter Campus has run recreational and educational activities for almost ten years.

The 150 kids from the Cateura area train every day on a sand pitch which gets flooded whenever it rains. Nevertheless, game time and fun are assured thanks to the tireless will of Julio Gonzalez Ferreira, the Inter Campus Coordinator and thanks to the dedication of the local coaches.

We find the same amount of enthusiasm among the coaches and children from the other area involved in our project. It’s also located in the capital and includes 120 children, orphans from poverty-stricken families from the Zeballos Cue district, where the Aldeas Infantiles SOS school and orphanage are situated.

On the last day of our visit, a tournament took place at the Zeballos Cue pitch. It involved all the kids from both Asuncion centres. It was an important chance to bring people together, perfectly reflecting the Inter Campus values.
