Inter's CEO Sport after the event: "Modern football needs technology. The path we're on is a positive one, dialogue can help us improve still further"

MILAN – Following the Lega Calcio meeting between Serie A referees and clubs, Inter’s CEO Sport Giuseppe Marotta commented on what had been said about VAR: "It was a very fruitful and cooperative meeting. I think modern football needs technology, which I’m very much in favour of. Protocol needs to be improved, with there being a particular need to address fouls in the box. It’s certainly the case that VAR is able to eradicate a lot of mistakes, but one of the key topics to address is handballs. I have to say that I think the instructions from the IFAB, the body that dictates the rules, are affecting things somewhat. I think this is the biggest issue to address because it’s extremely hard to arrive at a definitive solution when it comes to determining what exactly is classed as a handball, even with VAR’s help. As a director, I would like to stress how VAR needs to be perfected. We’re still looking at things and getting to grips with it. We’re not using the finished product at the moment, the tool will still be subject to changes. However, I believe the path we’re on is a positive one, despite the mistakes that have been made."
